When the authoritative history of graphic design is finally
written, it probably won’t include a chapter on Iranian
graphics, but if Reza Abedini’s posters are any indication,
it certainly should. The 38-year-old Tehrani is a dervish of
Farsi, the elegant cursive lettering of ancient Persia and
contemporary Iran. In Abedini’s hands (or rather on his
computer), Farsi becomes a two-way swinging door:
bringing a design ambience deeply rooted in Islamic and
Iranian culture to global society and opening the way for
Westerners to gain insight into Islam and Iran. —CB
