Thanks to machinma —a portmanteau of “machine” and “cinema”—game junkies can finally sit in the director’s chair by hacking into popular games like Quake and Halo to create entirely new “movies” inside the games. Players write the script and jockey their characters to act out scenes, then digitally record, edit, dub, and score the action—just like real directors. This “basement Pixar.” has already spawned features, chat shows, sitcoms, and shoot-em-ups—and some shows (e.g., Red vs. Blue) even have a growing fan base. Best of all: there have never been easier actors to work with. —Ian Daly
