Cecilia Gadea
A picture from the past, a song, a movie, a corner of her city—for Cecilia Gadea, inspiration comes from anywhere. Like her heroes, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons and Martin Margiela, Gadea believes that fashion must exceed trend to become art, and Gadea will go to almost any length to make the details of her designs spring to life, manually embroidering one part of a garment while using a laser to cut other details. Her most recent collection was inspired by Cocteau’s Les enfants terribles, the tale of two children who build a private, closed world for themselves. Somehow, Gadea translated this story into clothes that layer and combine details and textures with hints of school uniforms, undergarments, and children’s clothes. It’s gambits like that—experimental, fresh, and feminine—that are bound to make Gadea an international sensation.
