You won’t find a more elegantly designed trash can than those made by the Danish design firm Vipp. With its iconic domed design, Vipp bins need no help standing out from the crowd. But this year, Vipp took its brand to a different dimension, asking top designers including Karim Rashid, Nicole Farhi, and James Dyson (seen above, left to right), to transform the domed bins into singular works of art which were then auctioned off in Paris, London, and Lisbon to raise thousands for abandoned children in Brazil, AIDS orphans in Mozambique, a mango plantation in Ghana, and anywhere else the simple act of throwing away the garbage never needs a designer garbage can. —Ian Daly
