The Enigma: Zero Maria Cornejo
Much can be said of the fashion comet that comes and goes. On the other hand, the designer who works methodically season after season, each time deepening his or her visionary plot is even more intriguing. Such is the case with Maria Cornejo, who has quietly culled a devoted following over the last 20 years. Fans of the award-winning Chilean designer are seduced by her radical, modern cuts that magically play off and flatter a woman’s body in ways one could never expect. Each season’s collection naturally flows to the next, with thoughtful experiments introduced for definition. In fall 2007, key elements include cocoon shapes, zippers as pleats, and hooded parkas. But the starting point is always the same: fabrics and texture. “When I touch them, an image or idea will pop into my head,” she says.
