Sylvain Willenz
Brussels-based designer Sylvain Willenz takes an open-minded view of his materials and processes, allowing them to assume forms beyond their usual jurisdiction. His offcuts seating series is literally made by gluing together the offcuts left behind by a factory that cuts foam for mattresses. But Willenz seems particularly fond of rubber these days: his LED lights on aluminum rods-dipped-in-rubber resemble ice melting on tree branches; his rubber handbags play kinky “guess what I am” games with the objects stuffed inside; and his InnerTube light begs to be touched, its structure derived entirely from the circular tube lamp the rubber wraps itself around.
