Sondre Lerche is rocking out. The self-described geek from Bergen, Norway who is already on his fourth album at the tender age of 24, is totally jazzed about a technology called Opendisc that’s making its US debut on his new album, Phantom Punch (Astralwerks). Slip Phantom Punch into your computer and you get an e-punch: a pop-up requesting your name and email address which, once sent on its way, generates an invitation to a members’-only section of Lerche’s website where you’ll hear original demo versions, live tracks, and a photo gallery of Lerche’s hot band—they opened last year for Elvis Costello. It’s a great way to get to know Lerche better and hear the sonic sprawl of his music—incorporating bits of everyone from Fleetwood Mac and My Bloody Valentine to Os Mutantes, Elvis Costello, XTC, and Steely Dan. “I enjoy messy artists,” says Lerche. “Artists who follow their curiosity, who don’t always know what they’re doing. They’re on the way.” So is Sondre Lerche.
