Move to the beat
There is not much that's more important than your wellbeing. However, in today's non-stop, always-connected world, prioritising fitness can be a challenge. Discover how Samsung's latest Galaxy S5 and Gear range can help provide fitness tools and motivate us in a very personal way.
Will Francis, one of the UK's most influential tech bloggers, provides a first look at the latest features and applications found in the Galaxy S5 and Gear range. Check out what he has to say.
Your heart is one of the most important indicators of your fitness; how it reacts and recovers to even the simplest tasks can say so much. And this is why the Galaxy S5 now comes with a built-in Heart Rate Sensor, the world's first smartphone to do so. Located just beneath the camera on the back of the Galaxy S5, checking your beats per minute (BPM) is as simple as placing your finger on the sensor.
You may ask, why do we need heart rate sensors on our phones? Samsung's approach to wellbeing is all about helping people improve their fitness through regular updates and helpful reminders. With this sensor, you will be able to easily keep track of vitals, whether you are doing a workout or you're busy at work.
Keep motivated with S Health
The new and improved S-Health 3.0 provides personalised daily routines, along with target-setting functions and real-time coaching. These targets can be measured in steps taken, rate of speed, or distance travelled. And if you miss your targets, the S Health application is there to provide a friendly notification reminder. It's like having a personal trainer always with you, but with less yelling.
Get going with Gear 2 & Gear 2 Neo
Technology is creating and advancing tools that can help us stay fit, and Samsung is at the forefront of this movement. That's what led them to create the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo.
These wearable devices seamlessly synchronise with your Galaxy smartphone and also have a built-in Heart Rate Sensor, S Health integration, and a pedometer. With these tools, they can help track your daily movements and also create bespoke real-time coaching.
Add to this the 4GB of memory and a built-in standalone music player, and you really are ready to get active.
Stay active with Gear Fit
Voted the Best Mobile Device at the Mobile World Congress, Samsung's Gear Fit is your ultimate fitness device. Its curved touchscreen display and hypoallergenic band makes it ideal for an active lifestyle. Like the other Gear devices, it features the built-in Heart Rate sensor and S Health applications, but it also has an Always-on activity tracking system. This follows all your movements throughout the day, 24/7. This information can then be analysed on your Galaxy S5, helping you understand what targets you're hitting and where you need to try a little harder.
Shoot like a pro with the Galaxy S5
When you decide that something's worth capturing, there is nothing more annoying than unwanted blurriness. Whether it is because you couldn't get the camera ready in time or your camera simply wasn't capable of capturing such a brief moment, there is a definite sense of missed opportunity.
Samsung saw this as a great opportunity to help photographers all over the world, and with this in mind developed a new and improved Autofocus. At 0.3 seconds or less, it is the fastest autofocus found on any smartphone and delivers crystal clear images. This remarkable increase in speed is made possible by a hybrid autofocus system. By bringing together traditional smartphone technology with the autofocus found in compact cameras and also the phase detection system used in DSLR cameras, the Galaxy S5 focuses at unparalleled speed.
Take a closer look at the Galaxy S5 16MP camera with the help of Will Francis, one of the UK's most popular tech bloggers. Will's experience of the latest digital trends makes him the perfect person to give you a quick run down of some of the standout features that will transform your photography.
Why is HDR so important?
The High Dynamic Range feature of the Galaxy S5, which you would expect in high-end professional camera equipment, ensures that your pictures have life-like colours regardless of what lighting conditions you're shooting in.
The Galaxy S5 is able to achieve this thanks to a very clever image sensor, which takes multiple shots at different exposure levels and then combines them to create one perfect image.
Step up with Selective Focus
The difference between really good photos and shooting like a pro often comes down to little things. Sometimes it's technique; other times it's technology. To help give a professional look to your photos, Samsung created Selective Focus. This new feature allows mobile photographers to select which area of a picture they wish to focus on. With a tap of the screen, your photos get that studio look.
Samsung unveils Galaxy S5 and new Gear range
With the launch of the Galaxy S5 smartphone, Samsung Unpacked 2014 has brought Barcelona to life. Boasting new features like the groundbreaking 16MP camera, S Health 3.0 and new Finger Scanner security, plus three new wearable devices – the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Samsung Gear Fit – there is plenty to explore. Discover how these next-generation Samsung devices are improving our everyday lives.
Samsung Galaxy S5 has arrived!
The first thing you will notice with the Galaxy S5 is its new ‘Modern Flash’ design, which compliment a 5.1” Full HD screen with a choice of glam colours – Charcoal Black, Electric Blue, Shimmery White and Copper Gold.
However, packaged within this perforated exterior are serious performance features. The new camera has the world’s fastest autofocus speed, at just 0.3 seconds, and Selective Focus, so you’ll never miss a thing.
And on the topic of speed, the Galaxy S5 now comes with enhanced Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, ensuring that video streaming and web browsing is super fast.
Other features include S Health 3.0, which has a personal fitness tracker and Heart Rate Monitor, and enhanced security. This includes the IP67 certification, making it dust and water resistant, and the new Finger Scanner technology in partnership with PayPal.
Stay in shape with Gear Fit
As the world’s first curved Super AMOLED wearable device, the Samsung Gear Fit is ready to revolutionise the way you exercise. It features a 1.84-inch touch screen, changeable straps and instant notifications for incoming call, emails, texts and much more. However, what makes the Gear Fit so life-changing is its built-in fitness manager. This includes a Heart Rate Monitor and real-time fitness coaching, and is the perfect companion for anyone looking to keep a close eye on their wellbeing. Add to this the enhanced connectivity - now available with up to 20 Galaxy devices via the new Tizen OS - and you really do have the smartest fitness band.
Power up with Gear 2
Building on the success of its predecessor, the Gear 2 now packs in much more functionality and gives you greater control over its look and feel. Showcasing a new lighter design, with the 2MP camera and microphone now located in the bezel, it has straps and interface themes that can be easily changed, letting you create your very own style. The new built-in fitness manager comes with a Heart Rate Monitor and Real Time Coaching. Other cool features include a standalone music player with 4GB of memory that connects to a headset via Bluetooth, a WatchOn Remote for controlling your TV and set top box, and an expanded ecosystem with over 100 new apps to enjoy.
Live fast with the new Gear 2 Neo
Alongside the Gear 2 is the Gear 2 Neo, which comes with many of the same great features, including the 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen. But without a built-in camera it weighs just 55grams, 13 grams lighter than the Gear 2 making Gear 2 Neo an obvious choice for those who prefer an accessory that is more discreet. Like the Gear 2, it also comes with a range of changeable straps and interface themes, but with an alternative choice of colours including Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange. For increased time on your wrist, the new battery lasts three times longer than the previous Gear, and for increased connectivity, the new Tizen operating system supports 17 Galaxy devices.
