Put connectivity in your hands
By Alexis Carey, 21.10.2015.
We asked Mamamia journalist Alexis Carey to review the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and let’s just say, things got interesting.
Look, I'll be honest – I've always had a bit of a rocky relationship with technology.
Back in high school, I was literally the last person in my year to get their first mobile phone.
I still struggle to play DVDs at home (and yes, I still use actual DVDs. Don't judge me).
And when any piece of technology malfunctions? Let's just say there are usually tears. Many, many tears.
So when I find an app or a piece of technology I can actually use easily, it's kind of a big deal.
That's why I've stuck by Samsung mobile phones for as long as I can remember – I've always found them to be user friendly, intuitive and reliable.
And that's why I was so excited to hear about Samsung's new Galaxy Tab S2 .
Sure, it's incredibly simple to use. Yes, it's stylish and super slim, making it easy to carry around. And of course it takes beautiful photos, has a long battery life and is lightning-fast.
But the best part? Well, it's so easy to download a whole variety of apps to help you control the things you do every day, easily.
Have the Smart Home of the future
Always wanted one of those super smart, futuristic homes you see in movies? Well, the future is now - because you can use your device to connect to your compatible appliances using the Smart Home app.
All you need to do is download the app, set up an account, connect your compatible appliances and voila – you can control your washing machine, robot vacuum, air conditioner, sound system, Smart TV and even your printer via this device.
Use your tablet as a remote
If you're anything like me, you probably spend half your life either a) trying to find your TV remote (how does it ALWAYS end up either under the couch or under a mountain of cushions? How?) or b) trying to figure out which remote actually operates the TV. But with this device, that particular struggle could be over.
Samsung TV Remote app or Peel Smart Remote, you can connect your Galaxy Tab S2 to your compatible smart TV and then use it just like an old-school remote. What is this sorcery, I hear you ask? Well, it's actually pretty simple – once you've set it up, you can control your TV's settings from the one piece of equipment.
And if you don't have a compatible smart TV, don't stress. You can use an app by the name of SURE Universal Remote. Genius.
Share content from your tablet
You can also share content from your Tab S2 directly to your compatible TV, smartphone, printer or computer using screen mirroring, SideSync, Quick Connect or AirDroid. Yes, SideSync allows you to easily share files and texts between your PC and mobile device using the drag and drop feature – which is ridiculously convenient.
If your compatible PC and mobile device are connected with SideSync, you can use your Tab S2 as your phone. Yes, it may sound crazy – but through the pop-up window, you can receive phone calls or send and receive text messages. And hey, when your mother-in-law is in town AGAIN, you can keep her happy by showing off your holiday pictures up on the big screen. Nice.
But one of the best features of this baby is that it helps keep you connected to your other devices. Yes, I'm serious – you can share content (think photos, videos and documents) with your compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone, Samsung TV or printer - instantly.
All you need to do is swipe down from the top of the screen to bring up your notifications, press Quick Connect and then select the device you want to connect and share content to. You may even want to watch what's being broadcasted on your TV to your tablet when you're in another room (think kitchen or outdoor patio) so you don't miss the last few minutes of the MasterChef season finale.
So, yes – I might still struggle every time my printer has a
paper jam or when, God forbid, I have to tune the TV.
But I'm pleased to report that I am a pro at using this tablet,
thank you very much.
