SYDNEY, Australia – 28 February 2012 – From today Australians in 4G coverage areas will be able to surf the mobile web on a tablet up to five times faster than before with Telstra and Samsung launching the nation's first 4G-powered tablet.
Operating on the Telstra Mobile Network – Australia's only super-fast 4G LTE-enabled network – the Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9 4G features a high definition 8.9 inch touch screen, a 1.5GHz dual core processor for fast multi-tasking and weighs a mere 470 grams.
Warwick Bray, Executive Director, Telstra Mobile, said Australians are adopting mobile tablets in record numbers and super-fast 4G connectivity promised to boost the appeal of tablet technology even further.
"4G connectivity is set to make the mobile tablet an even more powerful way for Australians to browse the web, watch video and social network on the move. The leap in internet speeds available on GALAXY Tab 8.9 4G means customers can stream HD video and music over the internet, load magazines faster and enjoy rich internet content traditionally confined to a PC screen.
"In 4G coverage areas GALAXY Tab 8.9 4G can offer speeds typically reserved for the office which will make it hugely popular with businesses too. Customers will be able to access email, cloud-hosted applications and documents without the need for a bulky laptop and it's perfect for sharing multimedia content on client visits," Mr Bray said.
Tyler McGee, Vice President Telecommunications, Samsung Electronics Australia said "Samsung is delighted to partner with Telstra to offer consumers Australia's first 4G tablet device. We know speed is increasingly important to Australians as is portability and a sleek, stylish form factor, both of which the GALAXY Tab 8.9 4G offers in spades."
Using the Samsung GALAXY Tab 8.9 in 4G coverage areas, Telstra customers can:
- Do more things simultaneously – Load a magazine while synchronising email and downloading a favourite MP3.
- Browse the mobile web like never before – Load web pages at mobile speeds up to five times faster than Australia's fastest 3G tablets and upload content like photos and video at mobile speeds up to three times faster than before on a tablet.
- Get productive and connected – Update sales, ordering and logistics information in real-time thanks to a responsive, low latency connection to cloud-hosted documents and applications.
- Enjoy video with fewer interruptions – Video chat on Google Talk™ with fewer interruptions and stream internet video with less buffering.
GALAXY Tab 8.9 4G runs Android™ 3.2 operating software (upgradable to Android 4.0 in the future) and features a WXGA TFT display (1280 x 800 resolution) fortified by Gorilla® Glass. It is powered by a 6,100mAh battery for hours of entertainment without needing a recharge. It comes with a rear-facing 3-megapixel camera with flash and front-facing 2-megapixel camera. It is available with either 16GB or 32GB of memory on board.
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is packed with entertainment, productivity and content sharing services including:
- Samsung Music Hub**: Select from millions of songs to download into an intuitive playback system. Music Hub also provides artist bios, discographies and reviews.
- Samsung Readers Hub**: Access a library of more than 2.3 million books, 2,000 newspapers and 3,000 magazines.
- Polaris™ Office: View and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations while on the move.
- Google™ Mobile Services**: A suite of Google Mobile Services is preloaded on the Galaxy Tab 8.9 including access to tens of thousands of apps on Android Market™, Gmail™, Google Search™, Google Maps™ 5.0 with 3D maps and Google Talk™ with video and voice chat.
- AllShare™ service***: Provides seamless content transfer between the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and other DLNA-enabled devices such as HDTV's, monitors and digital cameras.
Telstra is the first mobile service provider in Australia to offer 4G LTE mobile services and superfast 4G coverage is available in Australia's eight capital city CBDs (meaning the inner-city suburbs and business districts situated within 5km from GPO) plus more than 80 regional and metropolitan centres (meaning within 3km from regional town centre).
Customers using GALAXY Tab 8.9 in 4G coverage areas will enjoy typical download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps and typical upload speeds from 1Mbps to 10Mbps.
The GALAXY Tab 8.9 is also Australia's first tablet to feature 3G dual channel HSPA+ connectivity. This means customers outside 4G coverage areas can enjoy super fast 3G speeds previously unavailable on tablets in Australia. These typical download speeds range from 1.1Mbps-20Mbps and are available in all capital CBDs and much of the associated metropolitan areas and many regional locations. Outside of these 4G coverage areas the GALAXY Tab 8.9 transitions to Telstra's fast 3G network that reaches 99 per cent of the population.
