What is an Optical / TOSLINK cable?

Last Update date : 2017.05.12

The digital optical jack, despite its name, is an outlet for digital audio - either Dolby Digital or PCM. The digital optical circuitry in your TV converts the electronic audio signal into a digital optical light signal and can transmit the signal through a special digital optical wire made up of glass fibres (a fibre optic cable). Using a digital optical cable (a fibre optic cable with a TOSLINK connector at both ends), you connect the digital optical output jack on your TV to a digital optical input jack on a compatible Home Theatre System or stereo amplifier.
