Manage your digital wellbeing using your Galaxy phone with One UI 2

It's an undeniable fact - we spend a lot of time on our phones or tablets. If you are worried that you're spending too much time looking at a screen, the new and improved Digital wellbeing feature on One UI 2 can monitor your usage times and even set timers for some apps. Take advantage of this helpful tool so you can take control your digital habits.

Think of the digital wellbeing feature as a budget, but for digital habits instead of spending habits. Open Settings, and then tap Digital wellbeing and parental controls. If it is the first time using this feature, you will have to tap Digital wellbeing to proceed. Here you can view your overall usage, exactly how much time you spent on your apps every day, the number of notifications you received, and the number of times you've unlocked your phone.

View your digital wellbeing and set timers

You can even set a timer for each app to help you keep track of how long you're using them. From the Digital wellbeing and parental controls home screen, tap App timers. Tap the drop-down arrow next to your desired app, and then select your desired amount of time. Or, tap Custom to set your own.

Looking at a screen before going to bed can actually affect how well you sleep. To prevent this, turn on wind down to change the screen to greyscale. This will help remind your brain that it's almost time for bed.

Use wind down mode

From Settings, tap Digital wellbeing and parental controls. If it is the first time using this feature, you will have to tap Digital wellbeing to proceed. Then, tap Wind Down. Tap Set a schedule, and then tap the switch to turn it on. Choose your desired day and time for using Wind Down.

When you need to concentrate on studying or just want some alone time, you can use Focus mode. From Settings, tap Digital wellbeing and parental controls. If it is the first time using this feature, you will have to tap Digital wellbeing to proceed. Tap the options for Work timeMe time, or Add under Focus mode.

Use focus mode
  • Work time: Set up this mode to block apps that you don't want to receive alerts from. Tap Start, and then tap Add to fill the list with your desired apps. Once your apps have been selected, tap Done, and then tap Start to begin. Tap End focus mode when finished.
  • Me time: Select the apps you’d like to use during Focus mode. Tap Add to choose your apps, and then tap Done. Tap Start to begin, and then tap End focus mode when finished.
  • Add: Lets you create your own Focus mode. First, name your mode and tap Save. Tap Add to choose your apps, and then tap Done. Now your unique mode will be saved for future use. Tap the More options icon (the three vertical dots) to rename your mode or to delete it.

You must end your current focus mode before adding a new mode.

You can restrict your child’s app usage by setting up parental controls with Google’s Family Link. From Settings, tap Digital wellbeing and parental controls. Tap Parental controls, and then tap Get started.

Set up parental controls

Select Child or Teen, or Parent, depending on the device’s user. In this case, tap Parent. Next, tap Get Family Link and install Google Family Link for parents. Tap Open, review the information, and then tap Get started. Tap Parent, and then tap Next to link to your child’s device. Tap I’m Ready, and then tap Yes to select your child’s account. Tap Next to set up your child’s device.

Using your child’s device, download Google Family Link for children & teens, and then enter the provided Family Link set up code. Tap Need Help? in the bottom right for additional instructions on how to use the supervision features on Android or ChromeOS devices.
