What Does The Error 0xc0000260 Or Stop 5d Error mean? (Windows 8)

Last Update date : 2014.09.25

The Error 0xc0000260 and Stop 5d Error

You may receive one of these two errors depending on how you purchased your copy of Windows 8. If you purchased the Electronic Software Download (ESD) from Microsoft you should receive the "Your CPU is incompatible" message before the Compatibility Check. If you purchased the retail edition from a retail store or online seller, you will receive the Stop 5d Error on first boot.

If you receive either of these errors it is caused by your processor. Some processors are unable to enable Physical Address Extensions (PAE) and/or No Execute (NX) which are required to run Windows 8. If your processor can not handle these processes, you will not be able to install Windows 8.
