What Is EDTV?

Last Update date : 2012.03.15

EDTV: Enhanced Definition Television. Enhanced definition televisions have video image resolutions of 480p (480 line progressive scan).

EDTV images are generally of higher quality than those of Standard televisions, which have resolutions of 480i (480 line interlaced). On the other hand, EDTV images are generally of lower quality than those of High Definition TV's, which have resolutions of 720p (720 line progressive scan) or 1080i (1080 line interlaced).  High Definition Signals on an EDTV will have a lower picture quality then a Hi-Def Signal on a HDTV.
