What Is A Cable Card?

Last Update date : 2012.03.13

A CableCard is a PCMCIA card module about the size of a credit card (but a bit thicker) that works with Digital Cable Ready TVs and lets you receive digital cable signals from your local cable service provider without a digital set top box.

Digital Cable Ready TVs have built-in Digital (ACST) tuners. To receive digital television signals using a CableCard, you attach a cable TV cable to your Digital Cable Ready TV, and then insert the CableCard provided by your cable company into the CableCard slot on the back of the set. After you have inserted the CableCard, your cable company downloads the channel, programming and subscription information you need to view digital cable.
