What is STB?

Last Update date : 2012.03.29

A set top box (STB) is an electronic device, similar in size and shape to a VCR, that tunes into, receives and decodes HDTV signals. HDTV signals can come from over-the-air broadcasts, digital satellite, or digital cable.

There are four kinds of STBs:

  • HDTV tuners
  • DirectTV receivers
  • All-in-one receivers
  • Cable HDTV receivers

HDTV tuners tune in, receive, and decode free over-the-air HDTV and DTV signals with an antenna.

DirectTV receivers tune in, receive, and decode digital satellite signals with a satellite dish.

All-in-one receivers tune in, receive, and decode both over-the-air and digital satellite HDTV and DTV signals. All-in-one receivers require both a satellite dish and an antenna

Cable HDTV receivers tune, receive, and decode digital cable signals.
