Samsung Hope for Youth Program

For more than 60 years, Samsung has raised the quality of life for people everywhere. As the world's largest electronics company, we apply the same innovation, technology and resources that have driven our commercial success to advancing the education and health of children around the world through our global citizenship program, Samsung Hope for Youth. It's one of the ways that Samsung uses INNOVATION TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE.

Through Samsung Hope for Youth, our more than 50 subsidiaries and 180,000 employees worldwide partner with leading nonprofit organisations to effect positive change.

By supplying Samsung products, lending our expertise and providing financial support, we're able to give thousands of children in communities around the world access to education, mentorship, leadership skills and life-saving medical treatment.

In 2011, we extended the mission of Samsung Hope for Youth to address needs stemming from the global recession, especially workforce readiness and job skill training.

Our U.S. and South African subsidiaries have developed two Samsung Hope for Youth programs that exemplify our global mission to improve quality of life and education for children: the Engineering Academy and Solve for Tomorrow.

ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE

Samsung Hope for Youth
Engineers Academay - South Africa

Not only is Africa facing a critical shortage of technical and engineering skills, its young people also are falling behind in their educational achievement in physical science and engineering. To help boost both the skills and education crucial to Africa's economic growth, Samsung opened the Samsung Hope for Youth Engineering Academy in South Africa. With the help of Samsung service engineers, this state-of-the-art training centre prepares students in Grades 10 through 12 for careers in the field. Students recruited from local technical high schools receive hands-on education that provide the skills and practical experience they

will need to be effective and competitive in the local job market. Some students will even earn the chance to be hired as Samsung service engineers when they graduate.

Through the Academy, we are building a workforce of technicians that's in line with the South African government's drive to create good jobs, especially for its younger citizens. Our goal is to expand the program to other African countries such as Nigeria, Kenya and Sudan, and to develop 10,000 engineers in Africa by 2015.

BRINGING SCIENCE AND MATH EDUCATION TO LIFE

Samsung Hope for Youth
Solve for Tomorrow - United Sates

Science and math education continues to be a challenge in the United States. American students are not advancing in these subjects at the pace exhibited in other countries. In fact, only 43 percent of U.S. high school graduates in 2010 were ready for college curriculum in math and just 29 percent were ready in science.

Samsung Hope for Youth Solve for Tomorrow is a nationwide video contest that encourages students and teachers to share the wonder of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) education. The contest is designed to raise enthusiasm in these subjects by making them fun and interesting. The goal is to boost STEM proficiency among U.S. children, ultimately strengthening the nation's future competitiveness. We are partnering in this effort with several leading education non-profits, including the National Environmental Education Foundation, as well as with leading technology companies such as Microsoft and Direct TV.

Using Samsung technology in exciting new ways, students created videos that answered the question, "How can science and math help improve the environment in your community?" The top five winning classrooms won $1 million in Samsung technologies, and educators began to recognise our deep commitment to improving STEM education in the United States. In its first year, the contest received over 1,100 submissions and almost 350,000 votes from the public.
