Goals to Attain the Greening of Our WorldSAMSUNG Electronics obtained the ISO 14001 Certification for our environmental management system in Dec. 1996. We were the only company given the environmental certification in the ISO 14000 series that year, given by the International Standard Organization(ISO). We also received an award from the British certification organization BVQI on September 1, 1996, the first of its type in the world. This further enhanced the international stature of Korea, as a country that continues to seek ways to promote global environmental preservation.
The ISO 14001 Certification took effect on September 1, 1996. The ISO certifies that enterprises are systematically executing the environmental management system based on a set of regulated procedures for environment preservation and improvement.
This company continuously strives to improve the environment by means of the Environmental Management System (EMS), integrating all three of our semiconductor business areas, including Kiheung, Bucheon and Onyang. With the ISO 14001 Certification obtained, we have been able to avoid all environment related tariffs. These tarrifs are significant barriers totrades with advanced countries Therefore, SAMSUNG is in an advantageous position, as compared to rival companies, in exporting to industrial countries around thw world.
For the first time in the world, SAMSUNG obtained the BS 7750 Certification on November 10, 1994, for the domestic semiconductor manufacturing business. All of our business units are designated as environmentally friendly, a result of our leadership in global environmental protection and management. We continue to place a premiun on respecting all life by insuring, through our manufacturing policies,a safer and cleaner world.
Goals to Realize the Greening of CommunityAccording to the Environment Ministry, SAMSUNG's Kiheung complex has been designated as an environmentally friendly company since October 17, 1995. The Onyang complex and Bucheon complex were also designated as environmentally friendly company on November 7, and December 5, of that same year, making all of three semiconductor business areas recognized as premier enterprises, not only in semiconductor technology but in environment management as well. Besides, all of the three divisions have been re-designated as environmentally friendly, having passed much more toughened regulations since December 31, 1996.
The environmentally friendly company management system is an active management method in which all of employees participate by actively reducing the discharge of pollutants. We have succeeded by evaluating the environmental impact of our entire business by setting concrete environmental goals that promote effective environmental improvement. Therefore, environmentally friendly means solid and practical environmental management. The system consists of three elements: 1. Environmental Impact Evaluation 2. Implementation of Environmental Management System, and 3. Setting Goals for Environ ment Improvement
We have set an example for environmentally driven corporations at home and abroad. With the International Environment Standard ISO 14001 we will do our best to stay on the forefront of this global effort with continual improvement in the areas of process improvement, replacement of toxic material, and the minimization of pollutants.
Goals to Realize a Green WorkplaceHaving implemented strict in-house regulations and a state of the art Tele-metering System SAMSUNG Electronics' standards for minimizing the release of pollution-causing substances are 30% stricter than those mandated by the Korean government. In addition, our tele-metering system monitors water and air quality at all plant sites every minute of the day. Data on pollution-causing substances are compiled and analyzed in real time; we report our findings to oversight organizations inside and outside the company.
