Industrial Cooperation

WSC (World Semiconductor Council) ESH TF Activities

SAMSUNG Electronics Semiconductor Division actively participates in the ESH task force of the WSC to cooperate with industry efforts to reduce impacts on the environment. The WSC is an international cooperative body in the semiconductor industry comprised of major semiconductor makers in Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, the US, and Europe for the purpose of minimizing the impact of the semiconductor industry on the environment.

The WSC was recognized with the Climate Protection Award by the US Environmental Protection Agency for its voluntarily goal of reducing green house gas emissions. The WSC established a convention to voluntarily reduce the total emission of perfluorocarbons (PFCs, greenhouse gas emitted in the course of semiconductor manufacturing) by 10% by 2010. SAMSUNG Electronics set a goal of reducing its PFCs emissions 10% by 2010 from the total emissions registered in 1997, by complying with the WSC goal. This is a challenging target given that production is continuously increasing in Korea. SAMSUNG Electronics is trying hard to achieve the goal by converting to chemical substances with a low global warming index, optimizing production conditions, and introducing an advanced waste disposal system. [Link to detail on PFC reduction]

The WSC also set a goal of voluntary reducing PFOS that now are used in tiny amounts for semiconductor manufacturing. SAMSUNG Electronics has discarded non-critical PFOS and is working to reduce or replace critical PFOS.

The WSC holds the ISESH (International Semiconductor ESH) Conference every year, where SAMSUNG Electronics presents 3~5 good examples of environmental safety and health.
