CLOUD COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS
Cloud computing and seamless Internet connectivity are gaining traction in today's marketplace. Mobile devices now go far beyond laptops and cell phones to include smartphones, tablets, and gaming systems. Increasingly, these devices are “always on,” and this “always connected” state is driving data traffic to ever-increasing load sizes around the globe. By alleviating some of the concern caused by an inevitable increase in energy and storage requirements, Samsung's advanced memory technology is poised at the center of the mobile revolution.
To meet the needs of cloud computing environments, virtualization is being utilized as much as possible. On top of the cost savings associated with lowered power usage, performance increases also save data center service providers any costs stemming from service level agreement violations.
The chart below illustrates the many ways your data center can benefit from Samsung Green Memory, ranging from advances at the product level to service-wide elements.
POWER SAVINGS WITH SAMSUNG GREEN DDR3
Memory is a major contributor to overall system power consumption. As you can see below, when memory density increases, power consumption is compounded.
Samsung's Green DDR3 follows the Industry Standards Specifications set by JEDEC. It combines and improves upon the advances of previous generations of memory, featuring improved energy efficiency and increased mobility. By using Samsung Green DDR3, a data center can increase its server resources by 80% without needing to upgrade its overall infrastructure. At the same time, overhead costs decrease by 44%.
Samsung Green DDR3 maintains a higher level of performance, while lowering power consumption. Its 86% reduction in power consumption saves enough money to add 55 more servers to your data center in just one year.

FOCUS ON TCO & GREEN IT
The most important goal for IT data centers is to increase performance and expand capacity without physically expanding the data center. One way Samsung is helping to achieve this performance improvement goal is with Toggle-mode NAND. Current throughput has increased from 40Mbps to 133Mbps, with 400Mbps speeds on the horizon.Lowering the I/O operating voltage (by nearly half) adds to your overall energy savings, while enhanced MLC endurance (a tenfold increase in the P/E cycle) means you will need to buy drives less frequently. Samsung Green SSDs with Toggle-mode NAND clearly contribute to lowering your total cost of ownership.
VIRTUALIZATION TESTING
Recently, Samsung and Microsoft published a white paper describing the results of a joint Proof of Concept trial aimed at quantifying the right choice of memory in a private cloud environment. They translated this choice into a measurable factor that directly affects the user experience and shows the time saved using a Cloud Infrastructure.Compared to a standard HDD system, the Samsung Green Solution, with Green DDR3 and a Green SSD, performed twice as fast when installing virtual machines while only using half as much power. When recovering user data after a system breakdown, the Samsung Green Solution again proved twice as fast while consuming less than half the power.
Samsung and Microsoft published a white paper describing the results of a joint Proof of Concept trial aimed at verifying the power saved by leveraging advanced DRAM process technology within a virtualized server environment.Samsung Green DDR3 clearly reduced the total power consumption of server systems in a data center running virtualized environments when compared to non-Green DDR3 approaches. In addition, Samsung Green DDR3 achieved a greater power reduction when more DIMMs per channel were used. Measurements also showed that the difference in power consumption between Samsung Green DDR3 and non-Green DDR3 memory actually increases as more DIMMs are populated in each channel of a CPU. The most important finding: the higher the memory population, the greater the relative power saving.
MAXIMIZING VIRTUALIZATION
Samsung Green DDR3 maximizes your data center's virtualization by providing greatly increased capacity with higher density memory, therein allowing for the use of even greater numbers of virtual machines. This increase in Samsung DDR3s translates into even higher power savings, thanks to Samsung Green Memory's energy and thermal efficiencies. On top of this, Samsung Green SSDs exhibit lower latency in virtualized environments.
