Dr. Steven Chu served as the Secretary of Energy from January 21, 2009, to April 22, 2013.
Dr. Chu was charged with helping implement President Obama's ambitious agenda to invest in clean energy, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, address the global climate crisis, and create millions of new jobs. Dr. Chu is the co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics (1997) and received numerous other awards. He has devoted his recent scientific career to the search for new solutions to our energy and climate challenges - a mission he continues with even greater urgency as Secretary of Energy.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Chu was the Director of the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, where he led the lab in pursuit of alternative and renewable energy technologies. He also taught at the University of California as a Professor of Physics and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology. Previously, he held positions at Stanford University and AT&T Bell Laboratories.
Dr. Chu's research in atomic physics, quantum electronics, polymer and biophysics includes tests of fundamental theories in physics, the development of methods to laser cool and trap atoms, atom interferometry, and the study of polymers and biological systems at the single molecule level. While at Stanford, he helped start Bio-X, a multi-disciplinary initiative that brings together the physical and biological sciences with engineering and medicine.
The holder of 10 patents, Dr. Chu has published ~250 scientific and technical papers. He remains active with his research group and has recently published work on general relativity, single molecule biology, biophysics and biomedicine, and on scientific challenges and opportunities in clean energy. Over 30 alumni of his research group have gone on to become distinguished professors and have been recognized by dozens of prizes and awards.
Dr. Chu is a member of numerous honorific societies including the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Academia Sinica, the Korean Academy of Sciences and Technology, and is an honorary member of the Institute of Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Lifetime Member of the Optical Society of America. He received an A.B. degree in mathematics, a B.S. degree in physics from the University of Rochester, and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley, as well as 23 honorary degrees.
Dr. Chu was born in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1948. He is married to Dr. Jean Chu, who holds a D.Phil. in Physics from Oxford and has served as chief of staff to two Stanford University presidents as well as Dean of Admissions. Secretary Chu has two grown sons, Geoffrey and Michael, by a previous marriage.
Wim Elfrink, an officer of the company, is responsible for three global functions at Cisco: the Industry Solutions Group, the Emerging Countries Initiatives, and the company's globalisation strategy.
Elfrink was appointed Chief Globalisation Officer in 2006 and was named Executive Vice President a year later. He went on to establish Cisco's Globalisation Centre East (GCE) in Bangalore, India. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Cisco Services, where under his leadership business grew from $3.3 billion to more than $7.6 billion in 2010. He joined Cisco in 1997 assuming global responsibility for Cisco Services Europe.
Elfrink is recognised as Cisco's Corporate Entrepreneur in residence and is responsible for the company's initiatives concerning the next era of the Internet known as "The Internet of Everything" (IoE) and "The Internet of Things" (IoT). Addressing emerging countries that are experiencing significant economic, social and environmental change and that are turning to technology for sustainability by being transforming from physical communities to connected communities are a major part of his global charter.
In 2009 Daily News & Analysis, a leading Indian newspaper, named Elfrink one of Bangalore's 50 Most Influential People, one of 12 from the corporate world and the only non-Indian to be featured. In 2013, he was the recipient of the Ambassador C. Howard Wilkins, Jr. Award from the Netherlands-America Foundation. In addition, Elfrink is a board member of the US India Business Council, a member of the Silatech Board in Qatar, the New Cities Foundation Board, and the Chongqing, China Mayor's International Economic Advisory Group.
- Guy Kawasaki is a special advisor to the Motorola business unit of Google. He is also the author of APE, What the Plus!, Enchantment, and nine other books. Previously, he was the chief evangelist of Apple. Kawasaki has a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA as well as an honorary doctorate from Babson College.
Ram Appalaraju is Vice President of Product Management/Marketing and Solutions Engineering at Cisco's Data Center Group. In this role he is responsible for Cisco's multi-billion dollar data center business consisting of UCS servers, Nexus switching fabrics, SDN and Cloud Networking Services product lines.
He has more than 25 years of experience in IT technology marketing. In addition to successfully executing high growth strategies for major IT companies, he has shared his insight into the needs of enterprise customers by authoring several technical articles and offering extensive consultative guidance to Global 1000 companies on both IT and business.
Ram has held executive management positions at GE, Digital Equipment and HP. As a Vice President at Hewlett-Packard, Ram led the adaptive enterprise Program – a company-wide strategy aimed at aligning enterprise customers' IT organizations with their business objectives. Charged with development and execution of adaptive enterprise solutions worldwide, he was responsible for comprehensive value delivery systems for key vertical markets, driving adoption of a broad portfolio of server, software and storage products and services. Ram also held senior management positions in the business critical systems business unit where he headed marketing of enterprise virtualization, infrastructure and high availability solutions
Ram has held CMO position at Isilon, and Meru Networks. At Meru, he managed marketing efforts through IPO process; from contributing to S1 to ringing of the opening bell at NASDAQ. Ram holds a B.S.E.E. from the University of Madras in India and an M.S.E.E. from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended an M.B.A. program at the University of Rhode Island and an executive leadership program at Stanford University.
As President of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. (SSI), a multi-billion dollar U.S. subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, Mr. Bae is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's business within the Americas including its memory, display, storage, foundry and System LSI organizations.
For the past 28 years, Mr. Bae has held various strategic marketing and sales management positions within Samsung in Korea and Europe. Prior to his appointment at SSI, Mr. Bae was senior vice president of Memory Sales at Samsung Electronics in Seoul, Korea, where he was in charge of developing global sales strategies for the world's No. 1 memory company. Prior to that, he served as president of Samsung Semiconductor Europe. Before that, Mr. Bae was responsible for leading Memory Sales and marketing in this region. Mr. Bae began his career at Samsung in the memory application engineering division in Korea.
- Bob Brennan, a Samsung Senior Vice President, is leading Samsung's System Architecture Lab – "SAL". SAL is chartered with leading the industry through the introduction of system and platform architectures that are aligned to the growth of Samsung's memory business. Prior to joining Samsung, Bob was the Lead Architect of Intel's Datacenter System on Chip products, with his most recent focus on Intel's Storage and "Microserver" line of products (codenamed Centeron, Briarwood, Avoton). Over the course of 22 years at Intel, Bob also led numerous design teams, including Notebook System Architecture, Mobile SoC Architecture, and Communication Architecture. Bob's educational background is mostly in computer architecture with a BSEE from Duke University and an MSEE from the University of Virginia.
Scott Dietzen is a three-time successful entrepreneur with WebLogic, Zimbra, and Transarc. Most recently, he was President and CTO of Zimbra, a vendor of open source messaging and collaboration software. Zimbra (now part of VMware) was a pioneer of the Web 2.0 and Open Core paradigms. Zimbra was originally acquired by Yahoo!, where Scott served as interim SVP of Communications and Communities. Prior to Zimbra, Scott was CTO of BEA Systems, where he helped craft the technology and business strategy for WebLogic that drove BEA from $61m in annual revenues prior to the WebLogic acquisition to over $1B.
Scott came to BEA in 1998 via the acquisition of WebLogic, an innovator in Java and web application server technology. Prior to WebLogic, Scott was Principal Technologist of Transarc (acquired by IBM), a developer of distributed transaction and file sharing systems. He also currently serves on the board of big-data trailblazer Cloudera. Scott earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science and B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.
- Chris is an expert in designing massive distributed systems on Google Cloud Platform. As a Solutions Architect, he works closely with developers to constantly push the envelope on Cloud technologies by harnessing the performance, consistency, and scale of Google's Cloud technology. He is passionate about building innovative Cloud solutions that rival the intricate, large-scale systems that he engineered for AdSense. His prior experience is comprised of engineering roles spanning a host of different industries, including finance, automotive, and brewing.
Jim Elliott, as Vice President of Memory Marketing and Product Planning at Samsung Semiconductor, Inc., oversees all marketing activities for Samsung's memory organization in the Americas. Elliott has 14 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, during which he focused on product sales and marketing at major multinational companies. He started his semiconductor career in 1996 at Hitachi in SRAM Marketing. In late 1997, he transitioned into the volatile world of DRAM when he joined Fujitsu Microelectronics.
Elliott has been at Samsung for the past nine years, where he has held leadership positions in marketing and sales. Elliott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Davis and later received a Master's degree in Business Administration from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.
He has been a featured guest speaker at a number of industry-wide events, including the Intel Developer Forum, MemCon, ISQED, the Flash Memory Summit and StorageVisions.
Carl Guardino has been President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group since January 1, 1997, making him the longest serving CEO in the organization's 35 year history.
The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, an association of more than 375-member company CEOs, was launched at a luncheon hosted by its founder, David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, on July 18, 1977. The luncheon was attended by 33 valley visionaries which included Intel Co-Founder Bob Noyce, AMD Founder Jerry Sanders and numerous others. The Leadership Group's member companies are located in all 50 states, almost all 435 Congressional Districts and more than 140 nations around the world. Collectively they employ more than 500,000 people in California alone.
Carl Guardino was born and raised in San Jose, California. He graduated from Blackford High School in 1979 and he earned his B.A. in Political Science at San Jose State University.
Roark Hilomen is a technologist for eBay's storage and data platform infrastructure. He is responsible for bringing in new data platform and storage infrastructure solutions for eBay Marketplace and general product offering for eBay, Inc.
In the past 20 years, Roark has worked on a variety of areas including OS, Imaging, Network Security and Storage, with patents in Host-based intrusion detection.
- Robert Hormuth is a Senior Distinguished Engineer – Executive Director of Platform Architecture and Technology in the Office of CTO at Dell. Robert has 25 years in the computer industry. Robert joined Dell in 2007 after 8 years with Intel and 12 years at National Instruments. Robert leads the Platform Architecture and Technology Group which is focused future server/storage/networking technologies and architectures. Robert and his team have advanced Dell technologies such as Dell Active Power Controller (DAPC), NVMe (Express Flash), Dell Processor Acceleration Technology (DPAT) along with Dell's leading 12th Generation Portfolio and have lead Dell's early ARM proof of concepts. Robert's past design/architecture activities include IO peripheral designs, x86 (386, 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II) system design, BIOS, firmware, software, and FPGA/ASIC design. Additionally Robert served as a Field Application Engineer supporting multiple fortune 100 companies. Robert has participated in creation of multiple industry standards (VME, VXI, PCI, PXI). Robert has a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
Robert Igarashi is senior engineering project manager for U.S. Network Operations at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) In this capacity, Robert oversees an IT team responsible for project implementation and support related to storage, servers, network infrastructure and security for Turner's state-of-the-art broadcast facility. U.S. Network Operations provides 24/7/365 technical and operational support for Turner Broadcasting's entertainment; animation and young adult; and sports media environments on television and other platforms. Network Operations supports TNT, TBS, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang, and serves as the distribution home for NBA-TV. Operational areas within Network Operations include engineering, broadcast operations, traffic, media, and multiplatform operations.
Robert's career in Information Technology has spanned 20+ years with more than 10 years at Turner. During that time, he has worked on various projects such as the construction of Turner's U.S. Network Operation broadcast facility in 2002 and Latin America broadcast facility in 2005.Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, creates and programs branded news, entertainment, animation and young adult media environments on television and other platforms for consumers around the world.
- Donald Newell is a Sr. Director, Technology in Qualcomm's CPU design team. Currently, he is engaged in developing technologies relevant to next generation data centers. Previously, Don was the Server CTO at AMD. Prior to that he was a Sr. Principal Engineer in Intel Labs. He has spent most of his career working on networking, platform and systems software issues related to server platforms and real-time systems. Don chaired the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC) work on data broadcast in DTV and was a co-author of IETF RFC 2429 for streaming H.263+ over the Internet. He has been an author on more than 60 refereed publications and has had 16 patents issued.
- Mr. Dave Wright is the Founder of SolidFire Inc. and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Wright Founded Jungle Disk, Inc. and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. After achieving notoriety in the online gaming community for creating Rocket Arena, Mr. Wright left Stanford in 1998 to help start GameSpy Industries, a leader in online videogame media, technology, and software. While at GameSpy, he was responsible for leading the development of online middleware and backend systems supporting millions of users across PC and Console platforms including the PS2, PS3, Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. He served as the Chief Architect of IGN. In 2007 he left IGN and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Wright serves as a Director of SolidFire Inc.
