Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS)
We are engineering the future of Flash memory, a future where the high speed of SSD meets the low power of eMMC. Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS) takes the higher bandwidth and faster interface speed of an SSD and combines them with the lower power consumption and smaller form factor of eMMC's architecture. Consumers will enjoy a better overall user experience, with fast boot times, a high-speed interface, and high-speed PC sync.
The projected evolution of eStorage interfaces sees eMMC bandwidth falling far behind that of Universal Flash Storage(UFS) . We have Universal Flash Storage(UFS) solutions to cover your future design needs, whether those are high-end smartphones and detachable PCs or low- and mid-range smartphones and tablet PCs.
Why Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS)?
Because Samsung is a leader in NAND Flash technology, our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) is built on our leading-edge technology and tightly integrated with our highly intelligent controller and firmware to provide the highest level of performance and quality for our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) devices. Our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) embedded storage provides mobile devices with the best of two worlds: the high performance of the SATA interface for PCs and the flash-optimized low power consumption of eMMCs.
The explosive growth of data-intensive mobile apps is creating a growing need that current Flash solutions may not be able to meet in the near future. Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS) provides the dramatic change in architecture that is needed not only to meet mobile users' future demands, but is also capable of immediately increasing performance while lowering power consumption. Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS) is uniquely positioned to benefit both device designers and consumers.
Built on eMMC's Heritage
Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS) follows in the footsteps of eMMC while still providing feature advancements that go beyond eMMC. Universal Flash Storage(UFS) still supports eMMC's Security, Data Integrity, Performance Enhancements, Flash Management, and Protocol Enhancement, while utilizing MIPI M-PHY and UniPro standards for physical and link layers. Unlike eMMC, Universal Flash Storage(UFS) is built upon the widely adopted SCSI command set and architecture model, enabling asynchronous operation and command queuing to provide the same high performance found in USB 3.0 and SAS. In addition, Universal Flash Storage(UFS) supports concurrent operation and multi-lane support, features not supported by eMMC.
Architectural comparisons between eMMC and UFS shows that UFS far outstrips eMMC.

Technical Advantages & Benefits
User activity increasingly requires more bandwidth. As mobile devices are used for more services such as digital camera and HD video, GPS navigation and mobile office, and web browsing and social networking the data load is getting heavier. From the ground up, our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) is designed for mobile, with such features as a high-performance serial interface and low power consumption both during normal use and while in standby mode. In addition, by supporting 6 Gbps bandwidth, Universal Flash Storage(UFS) overcomes the interface bottleneck between Wi-Fi (3.6 Gbps) and USB 3.0 (10 Gbps). Expanding beyond 12 Gbps provides an overall better user experience.
With its half-duplex data transfer, eMMC must wait for a command execution to complete before issuing the next command. Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS) features full-duplex data transfer, which allows it to support concurrent operations, command queuing, and out-of-order execution. Universal Flash Storage(UFS) 's asynchronous nature provides low latency for faster responsiveness.
UFS combines asynchronous command queuing with command reordering to determine the priority of processes. With eMMC, commands are executed in order, possibly causing a slow read response after performing a series of write commands. However, our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) recognizes the higher priority of a read command and executes it before executing the series of write commands.
The best example of these technical advantages of our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) can be seen in the improved user experience while multitasking; for example, the ability to play a video and download an app simultaneously in "Zero Read Latency" without losing a single frame of video.
If app swapping is supported by the host, Universal Flash Storage(UFS) can be expected to provide about a 60% reduction in latency compared to eMMC. On average, app implementation on eMMC is 5 seconds, but Universal Flash Storage(UFS) reduces that to 3 seconds. You will enjoy a more seamless experience, whether you are working or playing.
Samsung Universal Flash Storage(UFS) reduces data transfer times between your smartphone and PC by 50% when compared to eMMC. Archive your photos, transfer video for editing and uploading, sync your music playlists, and much more. Faster file transfer rates mean that you will spend less time waiting for your media and more time enjoying it.
Benefits of Universal Flash Storage(UFS)
Many of today's most popular mobile apps (such as social networking, email, and navigation) are affected by the entire mobile storage system. This means that your device's memory interface can impact application load time, task switching, and overall responsiveness. While eMMC is an adequate interface standard for today's smartphones and tablets, it cannot meet the needs of emerging applications. To this end, we are designing Universal Flash Storage(UFS) solutions to meet the needs of today while scaling to meet the growing needs of tomorrow. Universal Flash Storage(UFS) features an interface speed of 2.9Gbps that is scalable to 5.8Gbps per lane. With its lower energy-per-bit ratio, Universal Flash Storage(UFS) is still able to offer low power consumption while accomplishing much more tasks at higher performance.
The following displays the difference between eMMC and Universal Flash Storage(UFS) with 3Gbps x 2 lanes.
When it comes to manufacturing your devices, our Universal Flash Storage(UFS) continues to provide you benefits, this time at the package design level. In smartphones, high-capacity Universal Flash Storage(UFS) has a footprint that is equivalent to eMMC. This means your devices can benefit from the greater speeds and better performance of Universal Flash Storage(UFS) without increasing the footprint. The benefits are even better when taking PCs and tablets into consideration. When compared to SSD, our high-capacity Universal Flash Storage(UFS) presents a smaller footprint while even providing lower power consumption.
