Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world's largest provider of TFT-LCD display panels, today announces the development of a 21.3 inch low temperature poly silicon (LTPS) TFT-LCD attained by applying cutting-edge thin film crystallization technology known as sequential lateral solidification (SLS). The SLS technology facilitates introduction of large area LTPS TFT-LCD panels and driver circuitry on the glass substrate to achieve System-on-Glass (SoG) technology. Samsung's new 21.3" LTPS panel, with built-in driver circuitry, delivers LTPS technology to a broader range of applications from compact mobile handsets to large area panels. LTPS technology currently demonstrates limited TFT performance uniformity for large area applications. The SLS technology enhances overall uniformity by introducing a wider process margin scope enabling LTPS technology to be applied to even large area TFT-LCDs. SLS technology also enables the formation of single crystal like poly-silicon that will expand application to future devices such as SoG, sheet computer and “wearable" display. Achieving this advanced LTPS mass production process highlights Samsung's technological advancement as the market-leading supplier of LTPS technology. Moreover, the LTPS-TFT panel manufacturing technology is an important factor in the production of AM OLEDs (active matrix organic light emitting diodes) of all sizes. Samsung's SLS-based LTPS panel features a low-permittivity organic insulation film process that allows overlapping of metal lines for a high aperture ratio. The implementation of the low-resistance metal microcircuit technology, essential for producing large-area displays, enhances signal transmission rates. The new 21.3" LTPS TFT-LCD panel has an ultra extended graphics array (UXGA,1600x1200xRGB pixels) resolution of 5.76 million pixels and reproduces 16 million color shades for crisp picture images. Additional features are a brightness of 430nits, contrast ratio of 500:1 and a wide viewing angle structure. Technology Demonstration Samsung displays its SLS technology-based LTPS at the Society for Information Display International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition (SID 2003), to be held in Baltimore, Maryland, May 19-22. Samples of a 2.0-inch 4-color quarter common intermediate format (QCIF, 176x192xRGBW pixels) for high-resolution mobile displays and a large-area 21.3-inch UXGA LTPS TFT LCD are demonstrated at the Samsung booth; #552
