Sports: Contributing to the advancement of sports
Samsung in India has been associated with sports since the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. It has since been actively supporting the Indian Contingent - be it to the Olympic Games or the Asian Games.
To date, Samsung has been the Indian Team Sponsor for the Olympics in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. Samsung was also the sponsor for the Olympic Torch Relay that came to India in 2004. Samsung has made it possible for a variety of people to carry the torch from Olympic athletes and films stars to unsung heroes who had been through or done things for others which was truly inspiring representing what the Olympic spirit stands for. Similarly, Samsung went on to support the Indian team for the Asian Games in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014.
As a part of its Olympic and Asian Games campaign Samsung instituted the Ratna Program wherein the company supports top ranking athletes across individual sports disciplines with their training expenses while they prepare for the Games. Patterned on the lines of the Global Olympic Solidarity Fund, the Samsung Ratna Program has across the years supported talented athletes such as Archers Dola Banerjee and Deepika Kumari; Shooters Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang and Ronjan Sodhi; Boxers Vijender Singh, Mary Kom, Vikas Krishan Yadav, and Wrestler Sushil Kumar amongst others. Samsung also focuses on its own unique program such as 'Samsung Most Valued Player (MVP) Award’ which is given to the best athlete of the Games.
