POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. POP3 is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server.

* Protocol is a set of rules that control the way data is sent between computers

SMTP protocol is the protocol to send an email. A kind of 'rule' is necessary to send and receive emails over the Internet where servers of different communication environments such as operating systems and network equipment are connected. That is, if the formats of the sent and received emails are not unified, emails will not be sent to the recipient or will not be read properly. These protocols define how computers interact with each other and the control commands to be used to send and receive emails.

The sent email is saved in the POP3 server and the recipient fetches the email from the recipient's computer using an email program. Each of these servers has its own address. You have to set up the POP3 and SMTP server addresses in the account settings in an email program such as Outlook Express to send and receive emails.
