Samsung unveils Built-in air Conditioner (BIC)
In a 2005 Business Week survey, Samsung as a brand ranked 20 among top 100 global names. The result was indicative of the presence the Korean entity has earned in the electronics sector, including in the light-commercial segment of the HVAC&R industry.
Samsung was present at The Big 5, where in true fashion; it displayed its Built-in air Conditioner (BIC). The line-up, which goes up to 60,000 BTU is as light-commercial as they come – according to Samsung, BIC is ideal for commercial offices, villas and for small apartments (ground plus ten floors, say).

Samsung claims that the BIC is a typical, tropical-type air conditioner. It comes in ceiling and floor-mounted models and boasts of advanced features. “Our products have certain unique applications and components inside,” said Robin Kadyan, Manager – Sales & Marketing with Samsung Electronics Company. “Out Electronic Expansion Valve (EEV), for example. The valve controls refrigerant flow based on discharge temperature in order to achieve maximum capacity. EEV allow digitalized way of cooling. It’s smart cooling.” Samsung claims that some companies may have EEV but not across the range. They use an analogue system (capillary system) instead.

Samsung says that EEV brings several benefits to the air conditioner. “With digital, you are assured of longer life to the air conditioner, because it has more safety checks,” said Kadyan. “The compressor does not wear off. This, in turn, give optimal performance.

Another feature is the time-tested silver-nano technology, which allows for cleaner air and is 99.9% anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Silver-nano technology is not available in ducted systems, though.

Samsung has an established training infrastructure, with training centres in UAE, Qatar Saudi Arabia and Iran. At the Big-5, Samsung’s aim was to educate customers and to highlight the versatile nature of its systems. “Our machines can be tuned to varying conditions, and so is a most field-oriented system”, said Kadyan. “Since we have BIC, we would be looking at major projects”.
