  • Samsung NX10

We are truly blessed in this digital age. When once we were only limited to not-up-to-par cameras that weighs a tonne, now we are toting around good quality cameras a fraction of the size and weight. Case in point is the Samsung NX10. Once only thought the domain of large DSLR, the NX10 quickly destroyed the image by offering a large sensor (the same size as those DSLRs!) in a body which is much smaller and thinner than ever before. First looks are important, and from the start the NX10 makes no mistake – it wants to be taken seriously. With the classic DSLR styling and pseudo-prism hump that hides the flash, the NX10 can be mistaken by many as a DSLR. What is different will be apparent when it is turned sideways. The body is much thinner than any DSLR body on the market currently. This bodes well for a much more compact imaging solution that some people yearn for. At the back you will see the large, 3” AMOLED screen which looks beautiful in playing back pictures, but then looks can be deceiving. AMOLED screens generally are a bit more biased to the red colour spectrum, and thus the image on the screen will look a bit more warm than anticipated. This is however a minor annoyance to the overall package that is the NX10. Completing the package is a mode dial, similar to what DSLRs have to control the modes of the camera. The camera comes in two packages in Malaysia – either an 18-55mm zoom lens or a 30mm pancake lens. The quality of the lens is just ok, as the build is plasticky, and when you turn the barrel to zoom, the plastics rubs against each other thus creating unwanted friction. It is not as smooth as the competitors are. The APS-C sensor meanwhile is a very capable sensor, with good high ISO performance but marred only by the lack of available lens to take advantage of the large size. We need more lens Samsung! Overall, the NX10 is a very mixed bag for this reviewer. On one hand, it has the large sensor which promises good image capturing abilities, but on the other the build quality of the lens that comes in the kits suggests that Samsung still has some ways to go to really go against the big boys in the photography business.
