semiconductor business

SAMSUNG's Semiconductor Business is equipped to provide total mobile solutions and is leading the world memory market in terms of both products and technology development.

Our Memory Division is firmly established as the unrivalled global player. As of the end of 2006 we have remained the world's leading memory chip maker for the past 14 years in a row. We have been ranked first in the sale of DRAMs for 15 years, SRAMs for 12 years and flash memory chips for 4 years. We are also ahead of the competition in the commercialization of nano-technology and the development of new memory devices as well as multichip packages and fusion memory.

The competencies of our System LSI Division are focused on five main areas, and we lead the world in each one: display driver ICs (DDIs), smartcard chips for SIM cards, navigation application processors, CMOS image sensors and systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) for media players.

Our Storage Division produces hard disc drives that provide high data storage capacity to mobile products as well as digital appliances. Our technology leadership in this area is unquestioned. We introduced the world's first 1.8" hard drive and 2.5" hybrid hard drive in 2006, and in the first half of 2007 we released a 2.5" hard drive with an industry-leading capacity of 250GB.

Major Product

1Gb DDR2 SDRAM with 50nm circuits

  • World's first DRAM to be produced with 50nm processing
  • 32Gb NAND flash memory with 40nm circuits
  • Awarded 155 patents for original technology or modified technology, commercialized the first charge trap flash (CTF) architecture
  • Broke the 50nm processing barrier, opened the door for commercializing design rule of 40nm and smaller

512Mb OneDRAMTM

  • Fusion memory that incorporates a mobile DRAM and SRAM on the same chip.
  • Optimizes data processing speed between CPUs.

4Gb Flex-OneNANDTM

  • Incorporates the best of both worlds: the blazing speed of the single-level cell (SLC) NAND and the high capacity of the multi-level cell (MLC).
  • All data types can be stored on the same chip, greatly reducing the size of the mobile phone form factor.

512Mb PRAM

  • The world's highest capacity for a chip made of this new material.
  • Transmits data 30 times faster than NOR flash memory can and lasts up to 10 times longer, boosting the performance of mobile phones and other handheld products.

"Intelligent" DDI

  • A unique display driver IC that can measure ambient light and adjust the on-screen image for optimal quality.
  • Reduces display power consumption by at least 30% indoors.

1GB S-SIM card

  • A next-generation card solution that builds NAND flash memory into a smart card chip.
  • Performs security functions and stores multimedia data.

1.8" 64GB solid state drive (SSD)

  • Uses 8Gb single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory with 50nm circuits in place of a disc.
  • A new-concept device that expands the application of NAND flash memory beyond small mobile products and digital consumer electronics to include PCs; enhances system stability and performance.
