Can I Leave My Air Conditioner In My Window All Year?

Although it's probably better to remove the air conditioner from the window for the winter, you can leave your air conditioner in your window all year if you choose. However, if you do, make sure you:
Check and if necessary tighten all the screws and hardware that hold the air conditioner in place
Have the accordion window filler panels pulled out so that they touch the sides of the window frame
Have the filler panel secured to the window and window frame with screws
Note: You may want to insulate behind the filler panels. If you do, make sure you remove the insulation before using the air conditioner in the summer.
Cover all the other gaps between the air conditioner and the sides of the window to prevent air leaks
Fill the gap between the sashes above the air conditioner with a foam strip or insulation
It's also a good idea to:
Unplug the air conditioner in the winter, when you're not using it
Run the unit on Low Fan for a few hours to dry the inside thoroughly before using the air conditioner in the summer
