Refrigerators - Troubleshooting: Unusual Noise From The Back Of The Refrigerator

Last Update Date : Jan 12. 2018

Buzzing, Rattling, Grinding, or Other Loud Noises from Behind the Refrigerator are almost always resolved with the following simple solutions related to water not being connected to the fridge. The refrigerator will make other noises, but the content below is for the most common ones.

Connected to Water

If the refrigerator is making an unusual noise, verify/perform the following:

1. Move the refrigerator forward approximately 2 inches. If the noise goes away, it means the refrigerator was touching another object causing the sound.

2. If the noise continues, high water pressure may be the culprit. Turn down the water supply valve slightly to decrease the water pressure.

Not Connected to Water

**If water is not connected do not hold down the dispenser lever, as this will eventually ruin the water valve and prevent use of the water dispenser and ice maker in the future.

If the refrigerator is making an unusual noise, verify/perform the following:

1. Move the refrigerator forward approximately 2 inches. If the noise goes away, it means the refrigerator was touching another object causing the sound.

1

2. Turn off the ice maker to keep this sound from occurring. When water is not connected, the water valve will buzz/hum anytime the ice maker tries to make ice.

Note: An icon like one of these will be illuminated when the ice maker is off.

Note: All Samsung refrigerators have an option to turn the ice maker on/off via the control panel. When the Ice Off indicator icon/light is illuminated on the display panel, the ice maker is turned off. Display panels vary, but the functionality is the same. If you are having trouble finding the Ice Off button, reference the User Manual.
