Recycling Batteries Responsibly

  • The European Directive on Batteries and Accumulators aims to minimise the impact of batteries on the environment and encourage the recovery of the materials they contain. In the UK, regulations on the recycling of batteries and accumulators (rechargeable batteries) were Introduced in 2009. The Waste Batteries Regulations aim to significantly increase UK collection and recycling of used portable batteries from 3% in 2007 to 25% by 2012, rising to at least 45% in 2016.

  • The battery symbol on a product or on its packaging indicates that the product must not be disposed of with general household waste. Instead, it is the consumer’s responsibility to dispose of their waste batteries at a designated collection point so that they can be recycled. The separate collection and recycling of batteries at the time of dispo sal will help to conserve natural resources and ensure that they are recycled in a manner that protects human health and the environment. A comprehensive list of battery recycling centres can be obtained from: www.recycle-more.co.uk

  • All Samsung products that are subject to the Batteries Directive are compliant with the UK battery and accumulator Requirements. In accordance with national law, SAMSUNG Electronics (UK) Ltd is a member of an approved batteries producer compliance scheme. This scheme collects, treats and disposes of batteries on Samsung’s behalf.

An unassuming device

I have been using the Chromebox for near two weeks and have found the experience enjoyable. The device does not over-heat and is very quiet. However, what attracts me to the device is the simplicity and below are some useful features: * There is no bloatware or software that drains and eventually slows down a PC.

All the required software is from Google's Chrome store and the OS auto-updates. This device requires little maintenance, as you run the software from the cloud and it is not installed on a local hard-drive. * Boot times are quick and you are ready to go in seconds. * There are lots of software to choose from - from productivity to consuming media; the software covers most computing tasks. Negatives (issues to consider): While there are not many negatives, below are some issues to consider: * The device is not for dedicated users. Yes, for example, you can edit photos with something like Google's Picassa but if you want something more advanced, then there is nothing suitable in the Chrome store. This also applies to other dedicated tasks. It is good to have another laptop to complement the Chromebox, for more advanced tasks (I use the Chromebox for most computing needs but sometimes use my laptop) * If you are off-line, the device is largely limited at the moment. However, Google is working to make more applications available offline. * The Chromebox, if used at home, should get a more reliable internet connection but bear in mind that its speed depends on the quality of the internet connection (the processor is more than adequate to handle multiple tasks and open many tabs). * The Chrome browser does not currently support common fonts like Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New (though this could change, with an upcoming update). Similarly it does support many common Arabic fonts. Google offers its own versions of Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New (Arimo, Tinos and Cousine) but they are still different in appearance, despite similarities. Sometimes, this renders certain texts smaller in default appearance. To sum, Chrome OS challenges the way we think about computing and so it is still evolving. While the Chrome OS can only improve, you will need to compromise with its current limitations for its many positives (simplicity, little maintenance, improves over time, self-sustaining etc.). I fully recommend this device, if you are willing to make these compromises for the many benefits it offers.
