What is the digital switchover?

This means that the existing analogue television signal will be switched off by the end of 2012 and replaced with a new, stronger digital signal. Most people will receive many more television channels as a result of the switch.

When you actually switch to a digital television signal depends on where your digital products get their signal from i.e the direction of your aerial. Some homes in your neighbourhood or even on the same street can be served by different transmitters. This means they switch on different days, so you could be enjoying the new digital services before them but don't forget to re-tune all televisions and digital products in your home to benefit.

Digital television uses less broadcast space, which means that after the Digital Switchover there will be more space for new services and new ways to enjoy them.

  • New features such as on-screen listings, interactivity, audio description and subtitling for people with visual and audio impairments.
