    Clare Forbes
    TORCHBEARER
Clare has been selected as an Olympic Torchbearer for her inspirational attitude to life despite on-going hardships. Clare contracted meningitis when she was 17 years old, which meant that she lost both of her legs, some fingers, and left her with a brain injury to the cerebellum; this has left her with a condition called Downbeat Nystagmus, which affects balance and speech. She was also in a coma for six months and was told that she wouldn't survive. In 2005, after she was also told she would never walk again, Clare walked the London Marathon, the New York Marathon, and many 5k and 10k races for charity. She also has two wonderful daughters with her husband, which she was told wasn't possible; Clare is truly remarkable and a Local Hero to many.
