London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay
The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will be the UK's time to shine. Over 70 days, the Olympic Flame will journey across the UK, starting at Land's End and finishing at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London.
History of the Olympic Torch Relay
The story of the Olympic Flame goes back to ancient Greece where the Olympic Games first began. Originally, the Flame was lit as a tribute to the goddess of Hera and was kept alit for the duration of the games, a tradition still maintained today. To honour this proud history, the Flame is still lit in Greece using concentrated natural light and a parabolic mirror. It then travels from the original site of the temple of Hera to the next Olympic host city by official Torchbearers.
Torch Design
The London 2012 Olympic Torch has been crafted by East London designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. Featuring 8,000 small cut-out circles, the design pays tribute to the 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay.
The triangular-shaped torch also represents the Olympic motto, which is 'Faster, Higher, Stronger', and weighs just 800 grams.
