Telefonica launch the first 'Split Personality' device in the Cloudon Feb 28, 2012
The new Telefónica Dual Persona service allows the same smartphone to have two settings, one for private, personal use and one for business use
The service´s technology has been developed by VMWare and Telefónica Digital, using Telefónica´s cloud platform
The Samsung GALAXY S II will become the first Android devices enabled to use Dual Persona.
The Dual Persona service is part of the Telefónica Cloud Computing catalogue which is committed to versatility and segmentation, helping companies effectively manage their data bases, employees’ PCs, documents and productivity applications.
The growing need for access to information and company tools while on the move has driven increased mobility of applications and processes. According to Forrester, 60 per cent of companies allow their employees to use personal smartphones and tablets at work, which, along with the fragmentation of mobile operating systems, can lead to security breaches.
With Dual Persona, a company's IT manager can administer employees' work profiles and professional virtual smartphones on their Android devices whether they are personal or corporate devices. The service allows the complete life cycle of virtual smartphones to be managed – from the provisioning of new employees and the updating of applications and security programmes, to the removal and complete erasing of corporate information on the mobile device. This service is offered from the cloud, needs no investment and can be contracted in a matter of hours.
A company’s IT manager will have secure access readily available from the management console wherever it is located. Updating of professional profiles on the handset is done remotely the company will only pay for those mobile users it needs to and can adapt demand according to its requirements by using a monthly pay-per-use model.
Thanks to the mobile virtualisation technology supplied by VMware, each person's professional profile operates alongside their personal one. On their personal profile, employees are completely free to install applications and copy or download information. However the professional profile is controlled by the company which decides which applications the user can access and which security programmes apply to that profile (for example, the need for a password to access their corporate profile).
The professional mobile profile is protected by encryption and can be blocked or erased by the IT manager if need be, for example if the phone is lost or stolen.
Users can switch from one profile to another with a simple click, and can configure it so that they can receive notifications from the applications in one profile whilst using the other.
Initially the service will only be available to Android devices, although both companies are working to make the solution available to other operating systems and mobile platforms.

The Galaxy SII from Samsung will be the first handset available to use the Dual Persona service. Samsung is also working with VMware and Telefónica to increase availability to other devices. Samsung Android Smartpones, tested and ready for use with VMware Horizon Mobile on Telefonica wireless network, will be the first handset available to deploy the Dual Persona service. Since Oct. 19, 2011, Samsung has been working closely with Telefonica and VMware to expand the availability in their device portfolio.
