Please note: This article refers to the Samsung email app that is provided with your device. Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo, amongst others, all have their own apps that you can use for your email. If you're having difficulty with the Samsung email app, it may help to try using the app for your specific email provider.
Get support for:
Connecting an email account
To begin using the email app you need to add an email address. The Samsung email app makes it easy to connect to various email accounts including Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo.
Please note: this step will differ depending on the type of email you have. The app will connect to your email client and you will be asked to enter your email address, password, and to approve of the email privacy policy. You will also need to authorise access to the settings it needs to function correctly.
The email app allows you to connect multiple email addresses so you can easily access all your emails in one place. To add another email address, start by opening the email app again.
From here you can add another email account by following the steps again.
Syncing email
By adjusting the sync settings, the email app can be set to automatically download emails to your device. You can use sync settings to control how often your emails sync, to select which folders will sync and to set a limit on the size of emails that will be downloaded.
If email syncing has been turned on for your account, there are several settings that you can adjust.
- Email sync schedule controls how often your emails will sync
- Email folders to sync lets you choose which folders you want to sync
- Email sync period controls which emails will sync by the date they were received
- Limit retrieval size filters the emails that will sync by storage size
- Limit retrieval size while roaming lets you control the size of emails that will sync while using mobile data overseas
Composing and sending emails
The Email app lets you write and send emails from your existing email accounts. You can also attach files from your device to send.
If you are writing to an existing contact the address should autocomplete. You can also tap the contact icon.
Please note: you cannot recall or edit an email once it's been sent. Make sure you are totally happy with your email before you tap send.
You can use the email app to send files from your device as email attachments. Start by composing an email.
Please note: the Email app supports attachments up to 24.7 MB in size. If you wish to send files that total greater than 24.7 MB you will have to use a different app or send them over multiple emails.
Email notifications
Email notifications let you know when you've received an email or something has changed in the app. There are various options you can set to personalise your email notifications or disable them entirely.
It will display that 'Notifications from this app are blocked'.
App icon badges are the numbers that appear over an app when it has a new notification.
These will appear by default. If you don't want them to appear open the notification settings and tap the App icon badges switch. It will move to the left-hand side and turn grey when switched off.
If you have allowed notifications, there are several settings you can adjust for individual accounts. This means that you can have different notifications for each of your accounts. To start, open the notification settings.
It will slide to the left and turn grey when turned off.
These settings allow you to change the type of notification you will receive for each of your email accounts.
- Notification style lets you change whether a sound and pop up will appear
- Sound lets you change the notification sound
- Vibrate lets you turn on or off vibration notifications
- Blink light lets you change whether a light will blink when you get a notification
- App icon badges lets you change if icon badges will show for this account
- Lock screen lets you decide if emails from this account will appear on the lock screen
- Ignore Do not disturb lets you allow notifications for this email account even when your phone is on do not disturb mode
General notifications allow you to change the notification settings for emails from all your connected accounts. You can change the settings for emails that are Snoozed, from VIPs and relating to Privacy and security.
Tap the type of email you want to change the settings for.
These settings allow you to change the type of notification you will receive for important emails.
- Notification style lets you change whether a sound and pop up will appear

Manual setup and configuration settings
If you're having trouble adding an email address or use an email client that's not recognised by the Email app you can set them up manually instead. Manual setup also allows you to adjust the configuration settings for your account.
Please note: to manually configure the setup of your email you will need to choose Other even if your email client is listed.
If you need to access the configuration settings for your account after it has been set up, you can do so through the email settings.
Managing Spam emails and addresses
You can mark emails and senders as spam if you don't trust them or would prefer not to receive similar emails in the future. Marking an email as spam makes all emails from that address appear in the spam folder rather than your inbox.
The address that the email came from will also be added to your spam addresses. This means that all emails from this sender will be marked as spam in the future.
If you've accidently marked a message as spam, you can fix this by removing the spam marker from the email. To start, find the email in the spam folder and open it.
When you mark a message as spam the email app will automatically add the sender to your spam addresses. This will make every new message from that sender move to your spam folder. You can find your spam addresses in your email settings.
To remove an address from this list tap the options icon.
Creating and managing folders
Folders allow you to organise your email inbox. Some folders such as Inbox, Unread and Spam will be in your email app by default, but you can also create your own.
This will display all your existing folders.
If you want to place a new folder within an existing folder, tap the folder you want to place it in.
Please note: The folders that you create will be placed in alphabetical order. This cannot be changed. You can change the order of the default folders through the Manage folders setting.
The folders that you create are ordered alphabetically. This cannot be changed. You can change the order of the default folder such as Spam, Sent and Drafts through the manage folders setting.
The name of the folder will turn grey. It can now be moved up and down the folder list.
Please note: Inbox will always be the first folder in the list. You cannot move another folder to appear before the Inbox.
Searching emails
The search function in your Email app allows you to quickly find specific emails. You can search through all your emails, emails sent to or from a particular address, or by the email subject.
This changes the search function to only search for email addresses and contact names that contain your search term, rather than all the content of your emails.
This changes the search function to only search through the subject line of your emails.
Downloading attachments
You can use the email app to send and download almost any file that you have saved on your phone. Easily share your favourite pictures and videos with your loved ones or send yourself that important document you need to work on at home.
Once the attachment has been downloaded it can be found at any time in the Files app. Find out more about using the Files app.
Any attachments you receive will now be downloaded when your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. You cannot set your device to automatically download attachments over a mobile network connection to prevent you from running out of data accidentally.

The Samsung calendar app lets you bring together your events from other calendars including Gmail, Google, and Microsoft Exchange. This makes it easy to create shared calendars and import any you may already have. You can also add an alternative calendar such as lunar, Hijri or Shamsi calendars. You can also turn on calendar syncing so that your calendars stay up to date across all your devices.
If you use Yahoo, find out how to add a Yahoo calendar to the Calendar app.
If you use Outlook find out how to add an Outlook calendar to the Calendar app.
To Add an alternative calendar:

Remove a calendar
Sometimes hiding a calendar from your display isn't enough. If you would like to remove a calendar completely you can do so through your settings.
Please note: Removing an account will also remove it from any other apps. For example, if the calendar you want to remove is associated with an email account it will also be removed from the email app.
In order to sync your Outlook calendar with your Google calendar you will first need to copy its ICS address. Follow the steps below to find out how:
Once you have copied the link, follow the steps in the next section to add it to your Google calendar.
Once you have added your Outlook calendar to your Google calendar, follow the steps in the final section to sync this with the Samsung calendar app.

The Bixby briefing reads information such as the current time and weather when the alarm sounds. When setting your alarm, you can either set an alarm sound or Bixby alarm.
Please note: you will need to have Bixby enabled before you can use this feature. More information on how to set up Bixby can be found here.
Please note:
- Any prompt that says Authentication Error is related to an incorrect password. Please contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance in changing your Wi-Fi network password.
- To view the password you are entering tap the eye symbol next to “Enter password”. You should check the password you are using against other devices using the same Wi-Fi connection.
Samsung is aware of this issue and will release an improved software version soon. The available date for this update may differ depending on the country or mobile carrier. It is recommended to keep the software on your device updated to the latest version. Find out more about how to update the software on your device.
Until the new software version is available, follow the steps below to establish a Wi-Fi connection.
Register the Wi-Fi again after resetting the network settings
You can also try re-entering the password for your Wi-Fi network
Press and hold the power and volume down buttons on your device for around 10-15 seconds. Your device will restart. Try connecting to Wi-Fi again.
Please note: the image below shows the location of the volume down and power buttons on the S21 Ultra 5G. The location of these buttons may differ depending on your device.
There are a few settings on your device that may be preventing you from connecting to Wi-Fi. Check that your settings are correct for Wi-Fi access.
Please note: if a setting is turned on, it will be blue. If a setting is turned off, it will be grey.
Once you've changed your settings, try and connect to Wi-Fi again.
Next to the Wi-Fi network you are trying to connect to is an icon which indicates the strength of the signal. Having a weak signal may cause connectivity issues. If you are receiving a weak signal, try moving closer to the Wi-Fi source and connect again.
You can use the Samsung Members app to diagnose Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Open Samsung Members, go to Get help and tap Start under Diagnostics and select Wi-Fi to test it.
If the Wi-Fi network that you want to join is not appearing, it is likely that there is an issue with your Wi-Fi signal or router.
- Switch off your Wi-Fi router at the wall and wait 2-3 minutes before turning it back on. Once the router has successfully connected to the internet again, try to connect to your network on your mobile device.
- Some Wi-Fi routers support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Most Galaxy devices will switch between these channels automatically when required. For example, when you are closer to the router your device will switch to 5GHz and swap to 2.4GHz when further away.
- Make sure there is no interference between the router and your mobile device. Concrete walls, fridges and microwaves can all interrupt the Wi-Fi signal.
- If possible, try and connect your device to a different Wi-Fi connection. If you can connect, you should contact your Wi-Fi provider for more assistance.
If you have previously managed to connect to the Wi-Fi network and you are now having trouble joining, it may help to forget the network and reconnect.
This will remove any saved information on your device that could be interfering with the authentication.
Please note: if you want your device to automatically connect to this Wi-Fi network in the future, make sure that the switch next to Auto reconnect is switched on.
If you are connecting to a home Wi-Fi network, check if the other devices you own can connect. If you are unable to connect with any of your devices, the issue is likely with your Wi-Fi.
If you are able to connect using another device, check for and install any available software updates for your Galaxy device, then try connecting again.
Safe mode can be used as a diagnostic tool that lets you run your device at the basic interface without any third-party apps. This helps to determine if the issue you are facing is due to an installed app.
Please note: the image below shows the button combination for the S21 Ultra 5G.
If your device is still unable to connect, it is likely that one of your apps is causing the issue. Starting from the most recently installed, you should try deleting apps until you find which one is causing the problem. You can always re-install any apps that were mistakenly deleted.
Please note: You can also switch location on and off via the Settings menu. The location of the setting will be different depending on your device or operating system.
For devices running on Pie and above, go to Settings > Biometrics and security > Location
- For devices running Nougat and Oreo, go to Settings > Connections > Location
- For older operating systems and devices, you will find it either in: Settings > Privacy & Safety > Privacy > Location OR Settings > Location
Your device has different settings to determine the location of your phone or tablet. High accuracy settings use multiple sources to accurately pinpoint your location but will use additional mobile data and power to do so.
Please note: The location of the setting will be different depending on your device or operating system.
- For devices running Android 10: Settings > Location
- For devices running Pie and up (newer devices) go to: Settings > Biometrics and security > Location
- For devices running Nougat and Oreo, go to: Settings > Connections > Location > Locating Method
- For older operating systems and devices, you will find it either in: Settings > Privacy & Safety > Privacy > Location > Locating Method
- OR Settings > Location > Mode
Please note: On some devices you may need to tap "Biometrics and security", then tap "Location".
Mock Locations is available within the Developers Options on your device and is generally used by developers to test GPS and location-based apps.
You will need to turn on the Developer Options menu in order to use Mock Locations on your device. Please note that the primary purpose of the developers menu is for developers to test apps and software. Making changes to your device via the developers menu may affect the running of your apps and system. Some location-based apps (especially games) will not work if Mock Location is turned on.
Find My Mobile allows you to locate, lock and wipe your device remotely. To use Find My Mobile, first enable the Remote controls feature on your device:
Please note: On some devices you may need to tap "Lock screen and security" or "Security".
Please note: You will need to have a Samsung account in order to enable remote controls. If you are not signed into a Samsung account, you will be prompted to sign in or register.
Your Google Play country determines what content you see in the store. To change your country, you first need to set up a new country in Google Play. To set up a new country you must be in that country and have a payment method from the new country.
Please note: It is only possible to change your Play Store country once per year. For full information about Play Store country options, go to Google Support.
Please note: The "Country and profiles" option will not appear if you are not currently in a new country (this will be based on your IP address) and or you have changed your country in the last year.
Please note: Certain apps may not be available in different regions. If you move countries, you will need to change your default country in the Google Play app in order to access local apps.
Your Samsung Account is registered to the country where you initially set it up. To change the country of your Samsung Account, first delete your Samsung Account, then set up a new Samsung Account. You will also need to remove the old Samsung Account from your device, then set up the new Samsung Account on your device.
