environment performance
The 'greening of processes' aims to improve Samsung Electronics' efficiency through the development of
clean production technologies, material reduction and recycling, reducing factory emissions (land, air and water) and
maximizing energy efficiency. A key focus area is our plan to reduce direct and indirect GHG emissions
in response to the current climate change challenges.

GHG emissions, energy & resource consumption
GHG emissions from Samsung Electronics operations in Korea.
Note.
Emission data from stationary combustion,
purchased electricity, manufacturing processess,
leaks, and mobile combustion.
Greenhouse Gas emissions were estimated based on "Greenhouse Gas Protocol 2006" of WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) and WRI (World Resources Institute).

The 3rd party certification for GHG emissions
In July 2008, Samsung Electronics has signed Memorandum of Understanding ("MOU") with Korea GHG Certification Office of KEMCO (Korea Energy Management Corporation) in order to verify GHG emissions of 2007 in our operations in Korea.
Korea GHG Certification Office verified our measurements and annual reporting of GHG emissions under IPCC guideline and WRI protocol, and issued the certificate and report in November, 2008.

Renewable Energy
Samsung Electronics operations have begun to use electricity from renewable energy sources in order to save fossil fuels for future generations and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The company uses approximately 0.2% of renewable energy in global manufacturing sites currently. In the future the company is seeking to increase the use of renewable energy and has invested in the development of renewable energy technologies such as fuel and solar cells.
US
In 2004, Samsung Austin Semiconductor (SAS) joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership program. It annually purchases 24 million kWh of renewable energy which accounts for 6% of total electricity consumed per a year.
Europe
Some of the European subsidiaries are using renewable energy now; SEF (France), SEG (Germany), SENA (Sweden), SESA (Spain) and SEAG (Austria). These operations use an average of approximately 15% of renewable energy in their annual electricity consumption.
