Samsung Electronics applies environment management program and in order to minimize contaminant discharge through strict management and process improvement of place of origin in order to minimize environment contamination material generated during manufacturing process. Under a principle of self management of waste materials by oneself, we operate the aggressive activity to preserve resources and nature by expanding process facility and recycling facility.

Samsung Electronics has been making an great effort to preserve environment by altering the boiler fuel into LNG since 1994 to minimize air pollution material emission and managing contamination by real time base by introducing processing materials and new technology for prevention facility and also installing automatic environment measurement network.

The water utility by Samsung Electronics is divided into industrial water and public water. And we continue to expand improvement to decrease water utility and decrease the water utility by process improvement and reusability technology. For example, we decrease the use of water utility by reusing processed water as sanitary water of restroom, gardening water, and graywater.

reduction cases of water pollutants

  1. the application of membrane bio system in waste water purification unit.

    Suwon Complex has applied Membrane Bio System in order to minimize water pollutant emission during washing laboratory. Since it's not possible to process washing waste of 200 ton /day of which concentrations of ABS, the surfactant is equivalent to 58.40mg/L with general activated sludge process. Therefore, we installed high-cost membrane separation system into the aeration tank through numerous pilot test.

    Membrane Bio System is the high end ultra precision filter that enables to filter pollutants in the contaminated water through particulate port (0.1~0.4μm) which exists on the membrane surface.
    According to testing results after installation, ABS treated water of pollutants is discharged at the level of 0.05mg/L Also COD and SS was drastically reduced so we plant to apply membrane bio system for the construction and expansion of waste water treatment and sewage management.

  2. waste management

    Samsung Electronics promotes to reduce waste in all production bases. We recycle the waste organic solvent which was incinerated after being discharged with other materials by pipe separation process. In addition to this, we have recycled forty thousand ton/year of organic and inorganic sludge for raw materials of cement. By reusing waste facility, materials and parts at the plant through the recycling center so we achieved the reduction effect of waste occurrence and its cost. Also we applied the polluters-pay principle into each part of plant so reduced incinerated waste occurrence by cross checking separation and upgraded recycling rate by due to expansion of recycling waste.

management of hazardous chemicals

  1. pre-safety evaluation on new chemicals

    New chemicals needed in each process line or research are studied by the environmental safety and health (ESH) division to determine harmful effects prior to use. This pre-safety evaluation on chemicals restricts the quantity of use of forbids use to maintain safe workplaces. For instance, a toxic cleansing agent used in reflow ovens was replaced with a surface-active agent that dramatically reduced harmful effects. The use of volatile organic compounds (VOC), including solvents, were changed to non-volatile organic compounds which removed the problem of offensive odors. Raising the ignition point from 12 °C to 120°C has minimized the risk of fire. These efforts reduced 26 tons of chemical use that returned 600.7 million Korean Won in cost reductions.
