Paper Management
Samsung Electronics recognizes that sustainable paper use is crucial for climate change mitigation and environmental protection.
Therefore, the company has been working to expand use of recycled fiber in packaging. We are also increasing FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification of product manuals for preserving forests and reducing environmental impacts. In 2010, the company used 40% recycled paper content in packaging across all products. Also, 70% of manuals in home appliances (refrigerators, washing machine, air conditioners, etc) were manufactured with FSC certified papers.
To reduce paper usage, the company has introduced a range of programs for developing innovative green packaging and reducing overall packaging. Electronics manuals are increasingly replacing paper manuals. Currently, the company provides electronic manuals for notebooks and printers.
Eco-friendly 'shrink' packaging for washing machines
The company developed an eco-friendly Shrink Packaging system for washing machines. This contributes to paper reduction by more than 40%. The packaging is developed with the recyclable LDPE (low-density polyethylene) film, substituting previous paper boxes, which can reduce solid waste by 20% and CO2 emissions by 43%.
Slim & Compact packaging design for LED TV
The company is making efforts on developing more sustainable product packaging. In the case of LED TVs, it has made numerous environmental benefits through a continuous commitment to develop a slim and compact design. The 2011 LED TV achieved a significant paper reduction by reducing packaging volume and weight by 58% and 31% respectively, in comparison to the 2009 LED TV model. This also contributes to climate change mitigation by increasing the loading quantity by up to 102% and consequently reducing transportation emissions.
