7 Fun Printing Projects for Kids

  • Published: September 17, 2012

Children and their parents usually think of printers as a vehicle for creating a hard copy of a research project or book report, but Samsung printers can do double duty when school is out. From art projects to DIY clothing, here are seven ways to use your printer for fun.

1. Game Time

Kids are quick to get bored with their old games, but you don’t have to run out to the mall to buy another when they want to play something new. Let them print their own instead. Kids can create their own checkerboards, memory games, trivia games, or even playing cards, and print them out at home. Let their imaginations roam to wherever the games take them, whether it’s creating their own magical world or including themselves as characters in a home-grown adventure game.

2. Coloring – In or Outside the Lines

Numerous children’s websites let you print ready-to-go coloring pages, so young ones can add their own hues to their favorite cartoon characters or scenes. You can also draw your own simple line drawings for kids to color, or you can use software to convert a photo on your computer’s hard drive into a ready-to-color drawing. For a special treat, print out a bundle of pages and bind them into a personalized coloring book of your kids’ favorite things. A fast laser printer like the Samsung ML-2165W can tear through up to 21 pages per minute of black-and-white images, letting you print an entire book in just a few minutes.

3. Masks Aren’t Just for Halloween

Download a face mask template from the Web or let your kids design their own masks using a painting application on the computer. Resize the images to fit their heads and print in full color on card stock using a printer like the Samsung CLX-3185 inkjet. Kids can then continue to decorate their masks with markers, crayons, stickers, glitter, sequins and more. Use a bit of string to complete the project, then let the kids act out a play or story with their new masks in place.

4. Write Your Own Book

Every child loves to tell tales, some based on real life, some incredibly imaginative and fantastical. Give those tales a permanent home by collecting them in book form, accompanied by your child’s art work. Remember: A multifunction printer like the Samsung CLX-3185 can scan in full color drawings your kids have already made. Print the body of the book on regular paper, and print the cover on thicker, glossy stock. Bind it all together and you’ve created a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

5. DIY Stickers

Kids love stickers, but there’s no need to shell out for them at the stationery or toy store. Just load up your color printer with special sticker paper and print out full color stickables at home.

6. Puppets on Parade

Templates for simple wraparound finger puppets are available online, or kids can draw their own. Either way, just print the puppets out on regular paper, cut them out with scissors, and let kids wrap them around their fingers. Puppets can be further decorated or used as-is for a quick tableside puppet show.

7. Fashion Design 101

You can’t print out clothes on a printer (not yet, anyway), but you can use your printer to easily create iron-ons, using special paper that goes right into your paper tray. Find a design the kids like online, draw something new, or scan your kids’ best creations, then print them out and transfer them to a plain shirt. Talk about a true fashion original.
