Electronic cleaning fluids include water and other liquid substances, none of which mix well with electricity. Unplug your TV to keep yourself—and your TV—safe while you’re cleaning it.
There’s no need to reach for a spray cleaner right off the bat. Start by taking a dry, anti-static cloth (a microfiber cloth works well) and using it to gently wipe away smudges and fingerprints. This can be used on both the frame of the TV and the screen. Just make sure you use extra care when wiping the screen, as scratches will mar the image.
If you can’t remove a smudge or fingerprint with a dry cloth, use a cleaning solution formulated for TV screens to boost your elbow grease. Spray a small amount of screen cleaner on your microfiber cloth and gently wipe the smudges. Never spray the screen cleaner solution directly onto the TV, and never use any other type of solvent or cleanser to clean your screen.
Window cleaners, soap, ammonia, alcohol or any other household cleaner should never be used on your TV as they will quickly scratch or damage the surface of the display. Even minimally abrasive materials like paper towels should be kept away from your set.
Don’t be hasty. Allow your screen to dry completely before plugging it back in and turning it on. You can check for any damp areas by examining your television screen from an angle, as wet spots will create a glare that you’ll be able to easily see.
Many TVs come with stickers on their bezels, which tout the television features. When you remove these stickers, some residue may be left behind, and the tips outlined above may not be effective at removing it.
If these techniques don’t work, try putting a small amount of WD-40 on a new, clean, dry cloth, and use this cloth to wipe the residue on the bezel away. Be absolutely certain not to spray the WD-40 directly on the TV, and do not allow the WD-40 to touch any part of the screen, which can be easily damaged by the fluid.
