Samsung American Legion Scholarship

  • Published: November 10, 2010

Children are our brightest hope for a better tomorrow and Samsung is dedicated to providing opportunities that encourage our youth to share the wonder of life, learning and our planet. Education is one of the keys to their success and Samsung supports this through the Samsung American Legion Scholarship.

In 1996, Samsung endowed a $5 million scholarship fund to be administered by The American Legion in honor of U.S. veterans who helped Korea in its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War. The Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships, derived from interest and other income from the principal amount, for the descendants of these veterans. Since its inception, more than $3.8 million in scholarships have been awarded to 1,380 applicants.

Eligible applicants are high school juniors who complete either a Boys State or Girls State program and are direct descendants (child, grandchild, great-grandchild or a legally adopted child) of a wartime veteran.

Scholarship recipients are chosen based on academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service and financial need. Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration.
