Tips & Tricks: Notebook Settings Simplified

  • Updated: June 19, 2013

Your new laptop is packed with great features, but navigating through windows to find them can be challenging. Samsung’s Easy Settings system puts an end to that. It places the most commonly used settings and features in one convenient spot. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Samsung recommends Windows® 8.

Easy Settings is integrated into Samsung laptops and is designed to give you one-click access to the settings you’re most likely to change without digging through a confusing series of menus. Here are some tips that will get you up and running in a flash. Note: Functions may vary depending on the model and program version.

Getting Connected

  • Wi-Fi®: This feature turns your Wi-Fi radio off or on and lets you connect to or disconnect from your wireless networks in range. Turning Wi-Fi off when you don’t need it is a good way to save power—and it adds a bit more security to your system.
  • Bluetooth®: Like the Wi-Fi feature, this setting turns Bluetooth off or on. If you don’t have a Bluetooth peripheral, like a keyboard or mouse, just leave Bluetooth off. It’s another good way to prolong battery life.

Video and Multimedia Options

  • Adaptive Brightness (select models): Turning on the adaptive brightness system lets your laptop automatically adjust the screen’s brightness. A built-in sensor measures the available light. In darker environments, your LCD will automatically dim, saving power and preventing eyestrain. If you go out in the sun, or to a brightly lit room, the screen will brighten, making it much easier to read.
  • Movie Color Enhancer: This feature automatically improves screen quality during video playback, optimizing colors and hues for the best possible picture during movies.

Prolonging Your Battery Life

  • Battery Life Plus with Smart Charging: This feature lets you extend the life of your battery by reducing the maximum charging capacity to 70 percent. This feature helps prevent damage to your battery by keeping it from over-charging and overheating.
  • Keyboard Backlight (select models): As with Adaptive Brightness, this feature adjusts the brightness level of the lighting beneath your keyboard, based on ambient light levels. In a bright room, you won’t need keyboard backlighting on, and letting your laptop manage this for you saves you even more power.

Other Useful Features

  • Silent Mode: If you’re trying to keep as quiet as possible—after hours, or in class, for example—Silent Mode can help by reducing the speed of your cooling fan.
  • Fast Start: Fast Start is a special, hybrid sleep mode developed by Samsung that lets you get up and running in seconds. All of the work you started in your previous session will be right there and ready to go.
  • Chargeable USB: Many laptops include chargeable USB ports, which are special versions of the standard USB port that provide power to peripherals even when the computer is turned off. If you’d like to charge your phone or MP3 player while your laptop is shut down, turn the Chargeable USB setting on.
  • RAMAccelerator: This technology provides 1.5x faster speed when it comes to browsing and running applications.
