Edge-lit Technology at its Best!
Unlike conventional LCD panels that
use mercury lamps as its light source, the new Samsung 2-sided
Edge-lit panel uses LEDs lit on the left and right edge side
of the display as its sole light source. As a result, panel
is 52% more energy efficient than conventional LCD panels of
equal size. Samsung’s 2-sided Edge-lit technology works like
this: While a direct-lit LED backlight will project light forward
across the full expanse of the display from the front, 2-sided
edge-lit LEDs emit light from 2 LED bars, on the left and right
edges of every panel, requiring proportionately less power.
The 2-sided edge-lit technology gathers the light towards the
center of the display and bends it, reflecting it forward through
a light-guide plate that precisely focuses the light for outstanding
picture quality. Local dimming is the backlighting unit (BLU)
driving technique used, which divides the BLU into 2 x 8 blocks
and controls each block’s luminance independently according
to RGB pixel data within a block. The local dimming technique
significantly enhances power savings and the quality of the
moving picture.
Environmental
Safety
Samsung panels are RoHS compliant
(does not use lead, cadmium or other RoHS-identified chemicals
harmful to the environment). In addition, Samsung panels do
not contain other hazardous substances sometimes used in display
manufacturing, such as PVC, arsenic compounds or mercury.
Just 10.8
millimeters (mm) thick, the display allows for sale of the thinnest
LCD televisions produced (LCD TVs account for over 70 percent
of the TVs sold today) – TVs that can be hung just like a picture
frame, a couple inches from the wall. The dimensions of the
display also permit a significant savings in shipping materials.
The 55” panel itself weighs only 14.5 kilograms.
TV sets using
Samsung Edge-lit LED technology actually reduce greenhouse gases,
thanks to their low power consumption. Furthermore, use of the
local dimming technique reduces power consumption even more
and enhances moving picture quality due to greater control of
each block’s BLU luminance.
Edge-Lit LED –
Benefits Behind the Intelligent Design
Samsung 2-sided Edge-lit LED backlighting
requires 52% less power than conventional CCFL (cold cathode
fluorescent lamp) backlighting (55-inch), an accomplishment
that will help to reshape the global market for energy-efficient
TV panels. Samsung's Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology eliminates
most motion blur, leaving crisp precise action for the viewer.
It quadruples the frame rate from 60 to 240 frames per second
in a most realistic manner, without repeating the same image
to make more frames. Instead, the TV panel intelligently creates
an interpolated ‘middle’ image between frame A and frame B,
making the transition from one action to the next extremely
fluid.
