Faster, Thinner, Lighter LPDDR2 (and soon LPDDR3)
LPDDR2 has been a tremendous advancement for the mobile industry, one that has enabled OEMs worldwide to produce better differentiated, high-performance mobile devices. Today, thanks to LPDDR2, smartphones and tablets are able to deliver more memory running at higher speeds to accommodate the growing use of 3D graphics and high definition video.
Realize the Power Savings
As the market leader in the production of mobile DRAM, Samsung now offers LPDDR2 (with LPDDR3 coming soon), which can save 44 percent of the power consumed by memory in a mobile device compared to the previous generation – LPDDR1. This power savings occurs without affecting the chip’s high performance at levels high enough to bring full high definition viewing to virtually any mobile device. About 46 percent more power savings can be gained when moving from a dual-die package to a monolithic chip keeping the same total density. The result is an overall improvement of 70 percent in power efficiency at the component level.
Looking forward to LPDDR3
Samsung’s LPDDR2 has had tremendous success in taking the mobile consumer electronics industry to new heights. But there’s even more of a catalyst for design improvement in LPDDR3 – the most advanced mobile memory chip, now heading straight for the marketplace.

As mobile devices embrace faster processors and higher resolution displays, the use of LPDDR3 will improve switching between videos, photos, music downloads, phone calls and other applications, as well as improve high definition viewing in Ultrabooks™, tablets and smartphones.

Samsung’s 4Gb LPDDR3 Mobile DRAM will be able to transfer data at up to 1,600 megabits per second (Mbps). That is 1.5X faster than the industry’s current highest mobile memory performer LPDDR2, which operates at 1,066Mbps. The new component also consumes 15-20 percent less electrical power than its predecessor.

LPDDR2 and LPDDR3 can about add 45 minutes to the battery life of a 7-hour battery. For standby power, the savings are even more dramatic. A smartphone can add three days of stand-by battery life when using Samsung’s LPDDR2 or LPDDR3, which is a 23 percent improvement over LPDDR1 – from 12.5 to 15.4 days!

To meet the need for higher density mobile memory solutions, Samsung has recently increased the maximum LPDDR2 packaged density from 1GB (8Gb) to 2GB (16Gb). Samsung will continue to provide leading edge solutions with the introduction of LPDDR3 to enable a new generation of high-performance mobile devices.
