Hard drives for green computing

Samsung’s HDD product line features several drives engineered to protect the environment. The Spinpoint M7 combines unusual ruggedness and higher performance with reduced power consumption via a new controller. Samsung’s ultra-mobile, 120GB Spinpoint N delivers performance with less power consumption. Finally, Samsung offers the F2 EcoGreen (F2EG) drive, which has the lowest power consumption in its class. Besides running cool and quiet, the F2EG boasts environmentally friendly materials; the drive is free of hazardous substances.

EcoTriangle technology reduces noise

The 1.5TB F2EG only uses three disks. This means less power is needed to start the motor, less power to continuously spin the motor and it has a lighter head stack, which requires less power to seek. In addition, the F2EG reduces power consumption by using EcoTriangle, a low-power, low-heat, low-noise-operation technology. Besides its power advantages, the drive’s fewer heads and disks cut the probability of head and disk failures, increasing reliability.
