SAMSUNG Receives Orders for Monitors Worth 700 million Dollars from U.S. PC Manufacturers

(Seoul) - Samsung Electronics Co. announced today that it has recently concluded major contracts with some of the world? Top 10 PC manufacturers. The company will supply the U.S. based PC makers with 1.1 million 17-inch high-definition monitors worth US$ 700 million.

With an aim to sell 2 million high-definition monitors, Samsung will take 15.7 percent of the world market share which is predicted to be 12.7 million units.

Although Korea and Taiwan had waged fierce competition to occupy the top spot in the world market share for monitors, both had lagged behind Japan? NEC, Sony and Hitachi when it came to sales of large-sized high-definition monitors.

Samsung Electronics, which enjoyed the largest share of the world market and was ranked no.1 for its sale of the 14-inch monitors last year, plans to increase its production of large-sized monitors considerably.

This year, Samsung will reorganize its market share by focusing on the production of large-sized monitors, 15 inches and up, to take 62 percent of all monitors produced. Meanwhile, the company will reduce production of the 14-inch monitors to 38 percent, down from last year? 65 percent.

With the recently concluded contracts, Samsung monitor sales for 1996 is likely to reach the 10 million mark and will be worth US$ 2.8 billion. As its world market share rises to 17.9 percent from last year? 15.2 percent, the company will continue to maintain its position as the leading manufacturer of monitors in the world.

To strengthen its local marketing strategies and production system, Samsung Electronics will expand its scope of production in Great Britain and Malaysia, hasten the construction of its plant in Mexico and restructure the monitor production plant in Korea to accommodate the manufacture of the large-sized products.
