SAMSUNG Electronics Implements Award Program for Suppliers

SEOUL, Korea #May 14, 2001 #Cooperation between raw material makers and finished product manufacturers continues to strengthen worldwide. In step with this trend, Samsung Electronics Semiconductor Business President Yoon Woo Lee and other officials attended the first annual Semiconductor Supplier Continuous Improvement (SSCI) award ceremony on May 14. Competition in the semiconductor industry is accelerating, so the relationship between the chipmakers and their suppliers is more important than ever. The new SSCI program motivates suppliers to improve quality and strengthens the bond with Samsung.

At the award ceremony, Yoon Woo Lee stated, #amsung Electronics has systematized its supplier evaluation approach in order to create a win-win relationship with existing suppliers and to improve selection of new ones.#

Over 130 suppliers worldwide underwent strict evaluations before the final choices were made. Wafer producer Mitsubishi Materials Silicon Corp. (Japan) came away with the Best Supplier Award. Excellent Supplier Awards went to Shinko Electric Industries Co., Ltd. (Japan), Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. (Korea) and Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd. (Japan), while Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd. (Korea) and Eastern Co., Ltd. (Japan) received Cooperative Supplier Awards.

In order to ensure impartiality, the selection process was carried out by an independent Supplier Management and Evaluation Team (CMT), whose members are from the purchasing, quality and technology departments.

Samsung Electronics plans to give the award winning suppliers various incentives, including the first chance to supply materials for newly developed chips. The SSCI program allows the manufacturer a unique opportunity to instill pride in suppliers for their technological expertise and product quality.
