SAMSUNG to Supply Satellite Communications Handsets

SEOUL, Korea - October 21, 1997 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.'s Information & Telecommunications Division President Hee Joon Park and Intermediate Circular Orbit Global Communications (ICO) CEO Olof Lundberg concluded an agreement to supply Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) terminals yesterday, October 20, 1997. The contract calls for Samsung to provide terminals of three different formats: CDMA, GSM and CDMA/AMPS. Importantly, Samsung will be the exclusive supplier for the CDMA models.

At the contract signing ceremony, President Park said, "Samsung Electronics was the first to commercialize the cellular CDMA system.
And with its recent entry to the wideband cdmaOne development group, the company has risen to be one of the leading companies in the CDMA business." He added, "The contract finalized, Samsung Electronics will build a base from which GMPCS terminals will be developed and mass-produced. Moreover, we are in a position to actively develop the GMPCS business."

Mobile satellite communications are scheduled to go on line in 2000, and Samsung will provide 2 million terminals by 1999 to all of ICO's service providers.

GMPCS uses satellites in non-stationary orbits to provide communications services anywhere on the globe. Compared with geo-stationary satellites, GMPCS can transmit data faster with less frequency loss. As a result, terminals can be made lighter and smaller with GMPCS. Worldwide traffic volume can be up to 20,000 calls at a time.

Led by Inmarsat, ICO is a US$3 billion concern that is made up of 47 investors, comprising telecommunications and technology companies in 44 countries. One of these investors is ICO Korea, which was established among Samsung Electronics, Korea Telecom and Shinsegi Telecom.

ICO was established in January 1995 in the UK as a private company to provide satellite-enabled personal mobile globtal communications services. ICO's system will consist of a space segment and a dedicated ground network. The space segment will comprise 12 satellites (ten operational and two spares) in middle earth orbit (10,355km). The system will offer worldwide services such as digital voice, data, facsimile, cellular paging and global positioning.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US$19 billion flagship company of the Korean-based Samsung Group, intends to be one of the world's top five manufacturers of information and telecommunications products by the year 2005. The company is also focused on digital telecom products and by the year 2000, aims to be ranked among the top-three handset manufacturers by exporting over US$1 billion CDMA handsets. In an effort to improve the company's brand image, Samsung Electronics signed on as one of The Olympic Partner (TOP) companies on May 9, 1997, to provide wireless communications for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.
