SAMSUNG Electronics Develops 300MHz DDR SDRAM

SEOUL, Korea May 24, 2001 - Samsung Electronics has become the industry's first to come out with a 64Mb (2Mb x 32Mb) double-data-rate synchronous DRAM (DDR SDRAM) device that operates up to 300Mz. Its main application will be for graphics cards used to support high-speed graphics and moving pictures.

The 64Mb capacity is achieved by a unique 32Mb configuration that can process 2.4 gigabytes of data per second, the highest rate among all available devices in its class.
Double-data-rate synchronous DRAMs operate at twice the speed of conventional SDRAMs. These next-generation devices are currently used mainly as graphics memory, but in the future their applications are expected to expand to servers, workstations and personal computers.

Moreover, the rapid spread of PCs with CPUs of one GHz or higher and the booming game business are driving the expansion of PC multimedia functions. This, in turn, is propelling demand for memory chips that support high-speed graphics and moving pictures.

Samsung Electronics has applied its fine-pitch ball grid array (FBGA) package technology to the new device, which can operate on just 2.5 volts. Samsung officials believe that demand for their new product will extend beyond graphics cards to include notebook PCs, wide-area networks, local-area networks, Internet router and switching memory, and Level 3 cache memory for high-end servers.

Samsung Electronics will begin full production of the new device in the third quarter of 2001 and aims to take the lead in the market for DDR devices used in graphics cards and networks.
Samsung captured 50% of the world DDR SDRAM market in the first quarter of this year, and the company holds a 65% share of the Rambus DRAM market.
